GOING IN DEEP: SOUL CLAP & ULU CLIFFHOUSE 2ND ANNIVERSARY

Ulu Cliffhouse opened its doors two years ago and everyone was excited to see what they were going to bring to the cliff-top table both as a club and a music venue. With key members of the team having a background in music events and the music scene in general there was a lot of talk and thankfully in the two years that have passed since there has also been a lot of walk from the guys!

On Sunday November 10th they are hosting their 2nd Anniversary celebrations on the Uluwatu Clifftop with a monumental booking in Soul Clap playing a sunset set before the cream of their residents crop Per QX, Josh D and Deetone take it into the naughty hours under the stars and we can not wait to head down South and help the guys celebrate in style!

We managed to pin down not only Soul Clap for a killer Inspirations selection of tracks but also spoke to one of the Ulu management team about their 2 year journey!

SOUL CLAP’S  MUSICAL INSPIRATION SELECTION:

“Great DJing is all about creating an atmosphere. But sometimes there are greater powers at play that simply need acknowledgment to create memories! Sunsets are a perfect example and when a DJ pairs the moment with music the results can be deeply provocative. Here are 5 cuts from our own Soul Clap Records that when played at sunset can easily get some juices flowing!”

BENOIT & SERGIO – DANCING SHOES
“Electronic dance songwriting perfection with enough pop sensibility to get that hook sunk deep in your memory banks; this cut is catalog classic that seems to stand still in time bringing us right back every time it vibrates the speakers.”

MIDNIGHT MAGIC – MALIBU FUN
“Midnight Magic sets the vibe on this one, slow and sexy wins the race as we’re hit with one title wave of emotion after another.”

SOUL CLAP – ELEVATION FEAT. RICKY TAN, DAYONNE ROLLINS & FREEKY NEEK
“Written in Tallahassee, Florida during one of our stays working at What Studios the home of George Clinton / Parliament-Funkadelic this record is full of collaborative magic working with the talented young artists who reside there including the powerful guitar of Freeky Neek, Ricky Tan’s emotive keyboard chord voicing and the raw and real singing of Dayonne Rollins. Drop this as the sun sets, put your P-Funk horns to the sky and feel the power.”

UNDERGROUND SYSTEM – THREE’S A CHARM
“Underground continues to impress here with a groove that will make you move and sway as a warm summer day turns to into a hot summer night.”

NICK MONACO – MATING CALL
“This title track from super talent Nick Monaco’s world debut album. Complete with cricket sound effects and plenty of reverb this record definitely sets the mood of Nick’s timeless LP.”

ULU CLIFFHOUSE have really managed to negotiate that difficult task of running a large scale venue without losing that personal touch that makes you feel like you are somewhere where you are considered more than just a number.

They consistently offer great service, food and now with the recent addition of accomodation with The Clubhouse on site you can attend one of their music events and not even have to worry about the drive back home if you are not lucky enough to be a resident in Uluwatu!

But as a music magazine that was where they have really impressed us this year the most, with the calibre of their events. From Patrick Topping to Carl Cox and the upcoming Soul Clap show we are always excited in the office when we get the notification that ‘Ulu Cliffhouse has added an event’.

We spoke to one of the key members of the management team who has been involved since the start to find out more about their journey, their ethos and what the future holds for Ulu Cliffhouse!

HOW HAS YOUR JOURNEY BEEN AS THE GO TO CLIFFTOP VENUE IN ULUWATU FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS?

“A dream come true to be honest…. Couldn’t be prouder”

ULUWATU IS ONE OF THE FASTEST EXPANDING AND CHANGING AREAS ON THE ISLAND, WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU SEEN, AND ARE THEY POSITIVE CHANGES IS YOUR OPINION AND HAS IT MEANT YOU HAVE HAD TO CHANGE YOUR OWN PLANS TO ADAPTS TO THESE DEVELOPMENTS?

“Yeah there has been incredible growth here but it has maintained it’s authenticity due to all us visitors living with the locals in their villages. Growth is inevitable here but the manners and traditions are still intact”

YOU GUYS HAVE PUT ON SOME GREAT MUSIC EVENTS IN THE LAST TWO YEARS, WHAT WERE YOUR PERSONAL HIGHLIGHTS?

“Who could wish for more than a Beastie Boy opening up the House for you! But Carl Cox has been an incredible supporter of us and a true loyal individual. So thankful for the likes of Fatboy Slim, Eric Powell, Patrick Topping, Norman Jay, Darren Emerson, Guy Gerber, and the wonderful Cuban Brothers for all their support”

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR ULU CLIFFHOUSE BOTH MUSICALLY AND BEYOND?

“2020 is year 3 for us which is so important in any business as most people know. We have learnt all sorts of lessons and the choreography for next years events is looking so exciting. We can’t wait for you to come and play every day at our haven and of course stay all night in the 7 new beautifully appointed suites we have created.”

IF MONEY WAS NO OBJECT DEAD OR ALIVE WHO WOULD YOU BOOK FOR THE 3RD ANNIVERSARY?

“Wow that’s a tough one! Maybe the line up would be Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Notorious BIG, Prince, Frank Sinatra and The Beatles.”

So there you have it, form both sides of the booth, what more excuse could you possibly need to head down to Ulu Cliffhouse to party on the cliffs and help them celebrate this landmark moment in their journey!
