GOING IN DEEP: BASEMENT LOVE (BOILER ROOM SPECIAL)

On Saturday December 7th one of the best parties to be found anywhere on the island, or let’s get it straight… across Asia, gets the  international validation and recognition it deserves having been selected by Boiler Room to represent their latest series. Basement Love is a regular event which takes place at La Brisa and despite the fact they are constantly booking the very crème de la crème of talent from Europe, for those in the know, their own residents are MORE than capable of holding their own alongside these names, hence why there were selected by Boiler Room.

This Boiler Room special features two super cool selectors in Gerd Jansen and Nd_baumecker. Gerd not only runs the top-shelf record label Running Back, he is one of the finest DJs on the circuit period, with residencies at the infamous Robert Johnson and Panorama Bar and has been a target for the Basement Love crew since they began on their journey. Nd_baumecker has also been synonymous with seriously slick venues such as Bergahian and Panorama Bar as well as labels such as Ostgut Ton… enough said!

Despite these two incredibly heavy hitters, the Basement Love family in Tiago and the PNNY crew have carved out a niche (alongside Vault it must be said), for really repping the up and coming international acts and in turn the island’s scene, and managing to make it work. Partly due to the fact their home is in the beautiful La Brisa venue in Canggu, where the younger more music savvy and up for it party crowds tend to be found, but equally so due to the guys and girls who work behind the scenes and the decks to make it happen. They truly have their finger on the pulse and live the life.

All of the residents were either born and bred in Bali, or have been here for many years at the very least, and are synonymous with being great hosts, incredible DJ’s and just a genuinely sound up for it bunch of cool cats! So we pinned down the main man TIAGO to answer a few questions for us on the event, Basement Love and PNNY, the significance of the link up with Boiler Room and plenty more besides…

FOR THOSE NOT FAMILIAR WITH BASEMENT LOVE HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN RUNNING AND WHAT WAS THE ETHOS OF THE NIGHT WHEN YOU STARTED OUT ON YOUR JOURNEY?

Basement Love is a music event collective made up of myself and business partner Kelly Ariella it has been running since October 2018. The collective was born out of a shared passion for the underground electronic music scene, I would say that the ethos for this night was and will always be to create a space where this scene can exist, thrive and grow both locally and internationally. Previous to Basement Love we were working on Air Festival for four years, therefore the creation of this collective felt like a natural projection for us.

YOU HAVE BEEN IN BALI FOR A WHILE NOW, WHAT WERE YOU UP TO BEFORE YOU LAUNCHED BASEMENT LOVE?

I Moved here 6 years ago from berlin.

And after a couple of months kind of got into the game straight away.

Together with Walker Barnard, Sylvie Foret, Alex Kessler & Kelly ariela we started the monthly Umalagon Parties @ Jenja where we got to invite some great people like Acid Pauli, Fred P, Steve bug to name a few. Later that same year me & the same group of friends started the Air Festival.

YOU ARE ALSO AN ARCHITECT WE UNDERSTAND, HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO JUGGLE THOSE TWO CAREER PATHS AND IS THERE ANY CROSSOVER THAT YOU THINK IMPROVES YOU IN EITHER ASPECT?

My main focus as always been Architecture.

I started working in Event / parties in Bali because I love music, playing records & meeting like-minded people.

After living a couple of years in Berlin and moving here, hosting & being part of parties became second nature, so It was only natural for me to get back into it here in Bali.

Being an architect definitely helps me in terms of what my vision is for the parties: the artwork design for the flyers, the lighting, the dj booth & the bookings.

In the end to make a good party all elements need to be in harmony & work together, very similar to designing a good house.

HOW DID THE LINK UP WITH BOILER ROOM COME ABOUT?

Around 1 year ago I got approached by a friend who was starting to talk with Boiler Room about their plans for 2019 & a series of events around Asia.

I explained our vision to them & they where pretty keen from the start.

Later in the year Blaze, one of the original founders of Boiler room came to bali on holiday.

we showed him La brisa & the rest is history.

WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS OF RUNNING A PARTY IN BALI IN YOUR OPINION?

I would say that the pros of running a party in Bali is that we have such beautiful party venues and locations – I mean look at la brisa, we couldn’t ask for a better place to host a Boiler Room!
The cons are rainy season of course they really put a dampener on our parties ( pun intended!) as the best party venues are outdoors! The other con I would say is that it’s been quite hard to build a scene here as Bali is quite a transient place – being a tourist destination, however over the years we’ve managed to attract a loyal following of like minded individuals.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE HEADLINERS AND HOW YOU CAME TO SELECT THEM FOR THIS PARTICULAR EVENT?

Gerd Janson has been one of my personal Djs / producers favourites for a long time now.

I had been trying to get him to play  at Air festival for 3 years now, since Ata first played for us.

Somehow his calendar never allowed for it, but somehow it all worked perfectly for this event.

I think his music really represents everything that we stand for so could not think of a better Fit.

Nd_baumecker is also a personal favourite: During the 3 years I lived in Berlin I used to religiously go to Panorama Bar / Berghain every sunday whenever he was playing there.

THE MORNING AFTER THE NIGHT BEFORE… WHERE IS SOMEWHERE YOU WOULD SUGGEST OUR FOLLOWERS HEAD TO FOR SOME R&R IN BALI TO RECOVER FROM ONE OF YOUR PARTIES?

I would suggest the beach – nothing quite washes away a hangover like the ocean or a quick surf. As for the beaches I would recommend checking out the south coast or keeping it local at Berawa or Echo beach in Canggu.

WE UNDERSTAND BOILER ROOMS FOCUS CURRENTLY AND FOR YOUR EVENT IS ON THE RESIDENTS, TELL US ABOUT THE RESIDENTS WHO HAVE BEEN SELECTED TO PLAY ON THE NIGHT AND WHAT MAKES THEM STANDOUT FOR YOU?

At time of writing the residents selected to feature is still unconfirmed but it doesn’t really matter as the whole strength of what we do is almost like a Techno Wu Tang, each and every member can stand their own ground and is fully supported by the rest of the family and thanks to Boiler Rooms exposure we are just looking forward to representing Basement Love & PNNY as a genuine collective.

IS THERE AN ADDED PRESSURE KNOWING YOUR SET IS GOING TO GO OUT TO SUCH A GLOBAL AUDIENCE?

Definitely a bit nervous, but i always say, the minute you stop caring about something, is the minute you should stop doing it, so I know this will fire me to perform even better

PICK A STANDOUT MOMENT IN THE BASEMENT LOVE JOURNEY UP TO THIS POINT IN TIME

The last party we had in November with Octo Octa & Eris Drew.

IS THERE A BASEMENT LOVE ANTHEM THAT HAS BEEN PLAYED MORE THAN MOST OVER TIME AND IF NOT WHAT DO YOU THINK IT SHOULD BE AND WHY DOES IT ENCAPSULATE THE NIGHT?

Any Gerd Janson track 🙂

IF YOU HAD A MAGIC WAND AND AVAILABILITY AND PRICE WERE NOT A CONCERN WHO WOULD YOU LOVE TO PLAY WHO HAS NOT GRACED THE BOOTH ALREADY?

I actually don’t believe in supporting big name djs with inflated Fees, because I believe no one should get paid THAT much money to spin some records & I think its hurting the electronic music industry. So i would stick with the bookings we have been doing so far.
