GOING IN DEEP FEATURING SUNDAZE AT MANARAI BEACH HOUSE

This week we take an in depth look at one of the newest beach clubs on the island, Manarai, in Nusa Dua and more specifically their weekly Sunday musical offering.

We are also giving one lucky winner the chance to win a daybed with a 1 million IDR voucher to spend on F&B on Sunday, September 8th, keep reading to the bottom of the article for details on how to enter!

When we went down for the Charlotte De Witte event a few weeks ago, as their guests, it was our first time and we were blown away by the venue, beautifully laid out, it was big but felt cosy, the sound-system was impressive, the drinks were bang on, to one side the golden sands met the calm blue sea as a perfect juxtaposition to the energy radiating from the dance floor… we were very impressed!

Well, now they have a new and far more relaxed musical concept running throughout the month of September called SUNDAZE. As the name suggests it takes place every Sunday and the sounds they have chosen as the inspiration for the series are very different to what you normally expect to hear on the island with Global Ethnic Rhythms at its core, which we wholeheartedly applaud! From Afro-House to Cuban beats, it’s the perfect soundscape for an island afternoon in the sun with a rum cocktail or three!

Mixed up with live music performance as well, we really feel they have got the recipe just right for those looking to kick back and relax, enjoy quality F&B and occasionally take the short walk to the shoreline where the lack of breaks results in calm shallow waters… we are not all surfers after all!

They have daybeds with no minimum spend, which you can reserve, and two swimming pools to cool you down when the sun tan session gets a bit too much! They have also very kindly laid on shuttle buses from Ubud, which is a smart move as that is an area where ethnic beats are always popular, as well as Canggu and Uluwatu (details for shuttle buses can be found on their event page).

Their three residents are perfectly suited for the music policy of course in AUROVISION, MISTRAL,and DBRA. With live performance of their 8th September edition by JIVARAGA.

We spoke to MISTRAL, who has been one of the most popular DJ’s from the island for many years now, loved and revered in equal measure for her ability to play across a wide spectrum of credible genres, about her latest residency:

GIVE US A BIT OF BACKGROUND ON YOURSELF AS A DJ AND YOUR TIME IN BALI?

I’ve been DJ-ing around Bali for over 10 years now, and have been through all the various musical trends on the island and have organised a few events myself over the years, such as Adultery, Tropikal Nakal and Banjar Campout to name a few of my favourites.

YOU DON’T PLAY OUT AS OFTEN AS YOU ONCE DID THROUGH CHOICE, SO WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE TO PLAY AT SUNDAZE AT MANARAI?

That is what happens when I pick up too many hobbies! Hahaha But anyway, when Jonathan approached me for Sundaze and the music concept, I was immediately excited. I have been waiting to find a place to be playing out that same kind of sound. And things just fell into place, I feel like we have a solid team going down there.

WHO ARE THE RESIDENTS AT SUNDAZE AT MANARAI ALONGSIDE YOURSELF?

DBRA, definitely one of my favourite DJ’s on the island. Love her selections and she also produces awesome tracks!

AUROVISION, aka Adrian Giordano! Been loving hearing his sets for Sundaze. Either his early or late sets are equally awesome!

WHAT IS THE MUSIC POLICY AT SUNDAZE AND CAN YOU PICK THREE TRACKS THAT YOU THINK REPRESENT WHAT WE ARE LIKELY TO HEAR WHEN WE COME DOWN?

Global ethnic rhythms with a modern electronic sound.

Blay Ambolley – Walk for Ground (Aldubb Remix)

Tuğçe Kurtiş – Sevdan Olmasa (Rodrigo Gallardo Remix)

Sibu – Tapper Zukie – Freak (Sibu & Joe Nagall edit)

WHAT IS THE ACTUAL VENUE LIKE?

It’s on a white sand beach overlooking the Bali sea, there is two pools and plenty of day beds but my favourite is the Cabanas. I don’t really like tanning so the Cabana is awesome.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ARE THE MOST POSITIVE ASPECTS OF SUNDAZE AT MANARAI COMPARED TO OTHER BEACH CLUBS ON THE ISLAND?

I love that we feature different live musicians that are inline with Sundaze, I don’t think many other beach clubs do that.

And we are right there in the open, and everyone is welcome to join in the fun. And you can actually swim in a calm ocean since the waves don’t break on the shore.

ULUWATU AND SEMINYAK ARE MORE COMMONLY KNOWN AS THE BEACHCLUB SPOTS ON THE ISLAND, WHAT ARE THE MAIN ATTRACTIONS OF NUSA DUA WHERE MANARAI IS SITUATED?

Quite a bit actually, there is one of my favorite surf spot within walking distance from Manarai. Lots of water sport activity in the area and there is also the ABBC Contemporary Gallery within the complex, definitely worth checking out if they happen to have an exhibition.
