GOING IN DEEP WITH THE SOL SESSIONS AT WATERBOM BALI

If you follow Secret Bali Life then you will know that last year we could not heap enough praise on the guys and girls at Waterbom Bali in association with Bubblegoose Indo, for totally out the blue, putting on a series of really slick parties that were totally out the norm set by the Seminyak-Canggu loop of renowned venues and we attended, partied and applauded and hoped they would come back for more…. And thankfully, they have!

What better way to pass a Saturday than to slide down the ultimate waterslides on the island straight, into a dope AF party, sink a cocktail or two, do another slide… repeat repeat repeat!!

We are genuinely excited to see what they are offering this year and recommend you give some serious consideration to these parties they have got popping off this high season starting with turntable wizard and party starter DJ SKRATCH BASTID from Canada on Saturday May 25th who has kindly given us an Inspirations series selection of cuts to give you an insight on what to expect!

We also speak to Waterbom CEO Sayan Gulino who's family created the space and kindly gave his vision for the Sol Sessions series of events at Waterbom this year, so put on the music selection from Skratch Bastid and find out more about the event in the interview with Sayan below!!

SKRATCH BASTID

Check out these 4 new jams (+1 classic) that you can dance in the mirror to before coming to my show May 25th for Sol Sessions at Waterbom Bali:

Boasty - Wiley, Sean Paul, Stefflon Don & Idris Elba

This song is smashing every dance floor that it touches. Brush up on your hip movements with this infectious super-collab that sounds lovely booming through a big sound system.

Juice - Lizzo

Lizzo just dgaf and neither should you when dancing to a song like this. A fun, catchy, body moving icebreaker that drips swagger with every beat.

Better - Mac Ayres

This song came out today, and when I put it on, the weather instantly changed. The rain stopped, the clouds parted, my sweater turned into a light button down shirt, and I instantly became more mentally prepared for my trip to Bali. Mac Ayres the smoothest young gun on the block.

Toast - Koffee

"Toast" keeps going and reaching ears worldwide. Jamaica has had a huge influence on modern music, but it's been a while since a young woman from the island showed as much promise. Koffee's energy and message bleed through this track and create an uplifting vibe that is undeniable. Forward!

Love Light In Flight - Stevie Wonder

It was Stevie Wonder's birthday yesterday, and we must continue to celebrate this living legend. As I prepare to take this flight overseas, Stevie's love/plane metaphors fill me with with a "fuel injected passion" to bring this pent up long Canadian winter love to Sol Sessions. Try and listen to this without busting a mean two-step.

INTERVIEW WITH SAYAN GULINO, CEO OF WATERBOM

SO SAYAN TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF, YOUR BACKGROUND, AND YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH THIS SERIES OF GREAT EVENTS...

My father, Santo Gulino was in the reggae music industry in the 70s in production and distribution, so since a very young age, I was immersed in music on a daily basis.

My dad and I share a somewhat scientific approach to music while listening to a tune he used to tell me to pay attention to each layer, isolate the bass, identify all the elements of arrangements. Naturally, I've developed a very strong sensibility to music that never left me since. Like everyone else, I associate moments, memories with music. I now listen to a large variety spread across genres, I choose music according to what I want to feel in the moment.

What we are trying to do at Waterbom through Sol Sessions is to offer music that is not on your typical top 40 radio rates. We want to give exposure to artists who create for a cause, for a movement, and for freedom. These are elements in the creative process that are often ignored by synthesizers and auto-tune practices.

THIS IS YOUR SECOND SERIES OF HIGH SEASON EVENTS, WHICH IS GREAT. WHAT ASPECTS DID YOU FEEL WERE BEST FROM LAST YEAR?

An atmosphere of freedom manifested itself during Sol Sessions last year. There was a clear diversity of guests in the park mostly thanks to the artist curation. We focused on bringing underground and independent DJs in.

Sol Sessions are aiming to create a cultural event that represents Waterbom’s values of inclusiveness and togetherness away from the beach club party scene.

ARE YOU MAKING ANY CHANGES TO THE EVENTS THIS YEAR FROM CURATION TO PRODUCTION?

I feel this year we’re achieving a new level although we still aim at creating an inclusive event where we celebrate togetherness.

The make-up of Sol Sessions 2019 is very much a collaborative work, we have set up a dedicated creative team from different backgrounds (Drama & Arts, Fashion, F&B Couture and Design) to develop a strong event concept. The beauty of bringing people that are so different is that it forces you to challenge your own ideas, I like to use the comparison with the pizza, while you get a pizza dough on which everybody adds its own topping.

We envision Sol Sessions as a Carnival of Free-form Expression. Using elements of playfulness Sol Sessions are accessories of fun in the park.

This year the music curation showcases a mix of renowned and emerging local and global independent artists and DJs with unique self-expression to inspire and lead the crowd.

These performers are passionate with their skills and art, it ranges from funk to afrobeat, to hip hop, to cumbia and Latin music. We choose music genres that originated from various birthplaces of music.

In terms of production, Sol Sessions are taking place on the last Saturday of every month from May until September in and around The Pleasure Pool & Shack, an F&B outlet at Waterbom Bali. The Shack is a ‘Caribbean inspired retro beach shack bar diner’ and will be home to this neo-bohemian concept.

WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE EXPECT AND TELL US MORE ABOUT THE TAGLINE YOU ARE RUNNING ‘A CARNIVAL OF FREE-FORM EXPRESSION’?

I've attended a few carnivals in Columbia and Cuba. Music is a strong element, but it’s more than that a carnival is a gathering of the people playing music, dancing, eating and sharing together. it’s a spirit, an atmosphere that allows you to be you, an atmosphere which is created by the people. Sol Sessions are conceived to create multi-sensorial experiences.

Sol Sessions celebrates the ethos of the barefoot luxury lifestyle; Of those who strive to live consciously, break the mold, be extraordinary, make an impact and enjoy an ethical ‘Joie de Vivre’.

We promote creative socializing through inclusivity and collaboration. This is the direction and development of Waterbom’s current branding.

Sol Sessions distinguishes itself from a beach party by the way people are invited to express themselves and bring their own contribution and energy to the event. We welcome people to be part of a free form expression carnival where they can use props, accessories, adornments, music, and dance to explore their creative self.

The aim is to provide an opportunity for transformative experience through playfulness and fun which will leave you with confidence to enhance or overcome the fear of self-expression in everyday life.

WHAT CAN YOU TELL US REGARDING THE EVENTS THIS SEASON AND WHO IS HEADLINING THEM?

This season we worked with Bubblegoose Indo to help shape the musical direction through curating and facilitating  with the following headliners:

Vol.7 25th May: Skratch Bastid
Vol.8 29th June: Jay Boogie
Vol.9 27th July: Jeremy Sole & DJ Day
Vol. 10 31st August: Vadim & Uproot Andy
Vol.11 28th September: Nickodemus

Every event has a different musical flavor (like the pizza hehe) If you go for session 1 and then session 3, you will feel you’re attending different events. DJ headliners Genre are blending performances, you close your eyes and you can be in the Bronx or the Brazilian favela, Kingston streets.

We don’t plug and play, it reflects with the never-ending pulse of Waterbom. Apart from the music selection, the décor, the F&B elements will follow the theme of the headliner’s music style. For example, for Skratch Bastid, our F&B team has developed BBQ concept specialties and signature cocktails inspired from his music. Again, we are offering a 360 sensorial experience.

WHO ARE THE RESIDENTS AND LOCAL DJ'S SUPPORTING THESE GREAT ACTS?

For vol.7 on 25th May, we are welcoming the gracious Dee Wirkus and her soulful presence for our acoustic acts. We’re excited to have DJ Mikey and DJ David J as supporting DJs.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FIRST HEADLINER, SKRATCH BASTID, IN PARTICULAR, AND WHAT HE BRINGS TO THE (TURN)TABLE:

He’s a master in his trade, technically skilled, playing 3 tracks blending into 1 track and create his own version of it. SB style is very unique, it takes you by surprise to a level of enjoyment you'll never experience with another turntable player!

WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT TO KEEP THEM ENTERTAINED IF THEY CHOOSE TO COME DOWN EARLY TO YOUR EVENTS AND MAKE A DAY OF IT?

We are offering 2 types of tickets including a drink: day admission and night admission. Both allow you to stay in the park until 10pm while the park usually closes at 6pm.

With a day admission, you can come to the park from 12pm noon while the night admission allows you to enter the park starting from 4pm. With both tickets, you can enjoy all the slides until 6pm. From 6pm until 8pm, 3 slides will stay open for night sliding while the party will start at sunset at The Shack.

Where else in the world you can have fun in a botanical and sustainable waterpark with unique music genre and excellent food?
