SECRET BALI SOUNDBOY - RORY CORDZ

Rory Cordz cut his musical teeth in the concrete jungle that is London, before deciding to make the considerable 8000 mile leap to join his Disco partner in crime, Funkwise, here on The Island of The Gods.

Inspired by some of the Disco greats he can be found hosting the ever popular bunker room at Vault in Berawa most Fridays and is a very welcome addition to the musical fold here in Bali.

We spoke to Rory about his journey, his music and his thoughts on the beautiful island we are blessed to call home!

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF, WHERE DO YOU COME FROM ORIGINALLY AND HOW DID YOU END UP IN BALI?

Originally from London, UK. I found my way to Bali after a few visits but one in particular was after a tour in India and after my last gig it was the last day my visa ran out - I was thinking of heading somewhere after anyhow, my best mate Adam (Funkwise) is out here, so jumped on a plane to pay him a visit. A one week stay turned into five and a half weeks. I got a taste of Bali life, met some great people and set sail for here at the end of last year after Wonderfruit Festival with The Rainforest Pavilion crew.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE MUSIC IN BALI AND BACK HOME?

There are differences, as I think that London has been a pretty established musical hub for some time with a wide range of venues which have contributed to developing up and coming artists across the board genre wise.

And I do feel a big shift happening here at the moment in Bali with lots of artists making a stop in Bali on their tours which is broadening the offering and changing the landscape a bit with lots of new venues here. I really hope to see these new opening acts as a platform to help the talented local scene that currently exists on the island grow, as well as DJ's from overseas like myself.

I'd say the likes of Tantra who run Paddy Grooves radio have a broad scope and good ethos for connecting the dots between different music genres in a creative way, looking forward to seeing more artists like Latex come into the fold too. Crews such Rainforest Pavilion which are also doing a lot to promote local artists within Indonesia while also having a conservation initiative too, to protect Indonesia's abundant biodiversity.

WHO ARE YOUR INSPIRATIONS BOTH MUSICALLY AND IN GENERAL?

Over the years my inspirations have become a bit of a melting pot - musically I've danced through various genres which have led to my overall tastes today. I grew up listening to Pete Tong on a Friday night on the radio which introduced me to Dance music, but have always enjoyed rock, blues and soul music from an early age too. I would say I draw big inspiration from the Disco era of the late 70's / early 80's - artists such as Larry Levan, Patrick Cowley, David Mancuso...

Larry Levan Live at The Paradise Garage (1979)

David Mancuso DJ Set at Red Zone, Italy (2003)

In life, I guess new environments and people - constantly learning and evolving. Very fortunate to have a good crew of mates across the globe who are on their own hustle to pursue their passion.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE LOCAL DISH?

Ikan Goreng - Nyat Nyat - I tried this at a local Warung in Sidemen not so long ago, its definitely a new favourite. Also can't beat a good Nasi Goreng.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING THE MOST IN YOUR SPARETIME ON THE ISLAND?

Surfing, watching the sun go down with a coconut (or Bintang) at Kokoloko, Berawa on the beach. I also like taking my bike on a cruise around the island to explore different spots.

WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU PLAYING NEXT?

Can usually be found in the Bunker (smaller room) @ Vault most Friday's with partner in crime Funkwise doing our Discofunk night. We just recently had the honour of taking our sound which flows through Cosmic Disco, Deep House, Acid House and Soulful Grooves to the main room there last Saturday with guests Sunset People Project from Jakarta, so we are looking forward to the opportunity for some more in the future.

WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT LIVING IN BALI?

Food, Sun, Sea, Surf and being close to nature - that's 5 things, but its too difficult to choose one.

IF YOU COULD COME BACK AS ANY ANIMAL WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Probably a bird... maybe an eagle - the freedom to cruise far and wide. That's my view on it, but others may say a Sloth :)

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, NAME 3 TRACKS THAT YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO HAND WHEN YOU DJ… YOUR GET OUT OF JAIL TUNES!

Coeo - Cabrio Mango

Saison - Moody Blues

Junior Jack - E Samba

Thanks, Rory! We hope to see you spinning some tunes very soon!
