GOING IN DEEP WITH BOOKA SHADE

Sometimes in the Secret Bali Life office we get the opportunity to interview people that we genuinely love and with Booka Shade we got exactly that opportunity. We love them in our office, not only for their music and great live sets, but also for their general outlook on the scene and also out of respect for their vast experience and totally validated long-term success…

The guys not only took time do us a sweet selection of tracks that have been doing it for them recently but also took time out to chat to us about Bali, the music scene and the changes they have witnessed in the last 20+ years and also what they would do if Ja Rule asked them to perform at Fyrefest 2.0!!

To read the interview and listen to their selction, you know what to do and make sure you get yourselves KU DE TA on Thursday 14th March to check them perform a live set that is pretty much guaranteed to blow your mind… Enjoy!

FIRST OF ALL WE ARE REALLY EXCITED TO SEE YOU COMING TO THE ISLAND OF THE GODS, WHICH LEADS US INTO OUR FIRST QUESTION...WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG AND HAVE YOU EVER BEEN IN A NON WORKING CAPACITY!?

Yes we're very much looking forward to our first trip to Bali. We've been touring in Australia for the last 10 years, so kind of surprising that we never stopped over in Bali. This time it finally happens. As we both have families, we keep the touring as compact as possible, and never took some days off to relax at the beach in Bali. Call us nerdy, but also we like to spend time in our studio! We are very productive at the moment and enjoy releasing a lot of new music.

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS OF BALI BOTH WITH REGARDS TO THE MUSIC SCENE AND THE ISLAND ITSELF AND ARE YOU PLANNING ON SPENDING SOME DOWNTIME HERE OR ARE YOU GOING TO BE IN AND OUT FOR THE GIG AT KU DE TA?

We have a little bit of time before the first show, so hopefully we can explore the surroundings … after that we continue to Singapore, Hong Kong and then the tour in Australia.

YOU HAVE BEEN AT THE FOREFRONT OF ALL THAT IS GOOD ABOUT ELECTRONIC MUSIC FOR LONGER THAN MOST. THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF CHANGES IN THAT TIME NO DOUBT, SO WHAT WOULD YOU SAY WERE THE BEST ASPECTS OF THE SCENE IN THE MID TO LATE 90'S AND THE BEST ASPECTS OF WHERE IT'S AT TODAY?

We've been around since the mid 90's, long before there were downloads, iTunes, Beatport etc…. And we've been put in many musical categories, first Minimal Techno, Techno has become a worldwide phenomenon, and it became very professional. Because there are so many festivals, we see that a lot of clubs have to close down, which is sad because this is where the new vibes will be born. For a long time we mainly played festivals, but in the last year we started to do a lot of club gigs again, because it´s important to support the club scene and feel why we fell in love with it in the first place.

IF YOU WERE GIVEN THE TASK OF PICKING 3 ELECTRONIC MUSIC ACTS TO BE ENTERED INTO A HALL OF FAME FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO THE SCENE, WHO MAKES YOUR LIST?

Sven Vaeth (our musical socialisation took place at his club The Omen in Frankfurt in the 90´s)
Chemical Brothers (for bringing incredible electronic Live shows on stage)
Kraftwerk (for… well, starting the whole thing!)

DO YOU GUYS HAVE OR TAKE THE TIME TO CHECK OUT ARTISTS FROM OUTSIDE OF THE NORMAL HOTSPOTS FOR ELECTRONIC MUSIC ACTS, SUCH AS INDONESIA AND IF SO WHO HAS CAUGHT YOUR EARS AND EYES MOST RECENTLY THAT YOU THINK WE SHOULD CHECK OUT?

First of all we are musicians and producers, so we mostly are focussed on our own music. That was also the case when we started the label Get Physical in the early 2000´s. The other partners, M.A.N.D.Y and DJ T, were the A&R´s.
Some years ago we started our own label Blaufield, mainly to release our own music. Since a year or so we begin to find a lot of enthusiasm in giving new artists the opportunity to release on our label, to open them doors into the business that we work in for 25 years.

M.A.N.D.Y vs Booka Shade - Body Language

Examples are ARM IN ARM from Melbourne Australia, or PÔNGO from Italy. Both happen to be Live acts, just like us. But it´s a coincidence, not a strategy. We´re happy that we receive a lot of demos from all over the world and will continue to try and find new exciting talents.

BALI IS SYNONYMOUS WITH OUTDOOR PARTYING WHICH GOT US THINKING ABOUT FESTIVALS AND HOW MANY THERE ARE THESE DAYS, AND WE WANTED TO ASK YOU WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE FESTIVAL TO EITHER PLAY AT OR ATTEND AND WHAT MAKES IT STAND OUT?

“Outdoor partying” reminds me of the long gone days when it was still possible to party on the beaches in Ibiza. You're right, there are so many festivals nowadays. A selection of festivals we love: Coachella, Sonar, A magical place to perform is Red Rocks in the Rocky Mountains outside of Denver Colorado. It´s an amphitheatre surrounded by the mountains.

Concerts at Red Rocks in the Rocky Mountains, Denver, Colorado.

REINCARNATION IS OBVIOUSLY A CONCEPT TAKEN SERIOUSLY BY THE LOCAL COMMUNITY IN BALI, IF YOU COULD REINCARNATED WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO COME BACK AS?

King Julian from the Madagascar movies. He has it all.

IF JA RULE RINGS YOU UP TOMORROW AND OFFERS YOU 1 MILLION DOLLARS TO PLAY AT FYRE FEST 2.0, WHAT WOULD YOU TELL HIM?

Underground Rules.
But seriously: we always loved electronic music and who would have thought when we started in the early 90´s that a global multi billion dollar economy called TECHNO would grow from the seeds that were planted in the clubs back then. In the old days before Booka Shade we were very successful chart producers but we gave it up because we wanted to only do music that we truly love.

We have turned down many lucrative offers over the years because they didn't feel right. These monies always come with a certain price you have to pay. We are very happy with the life we live; we live our own little dream of music. We are surrounded by likeminded people who love music and feel privileged to have the possibility to bring our music to audiences all over the world.

TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR LIVE SHOW AND FOR THOSE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOUR LIVE PERFORMANCES, WHAT ACTUALLY GOES DOWN AND WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT FROM YOUR SET?

We're a Live act, we perform electronic club music live on stage.
We bring keyboards, effect units, and an electronic drum kit and get crazy with them; a lot of energy on stage. We play our own songs, with a mix of unreleased material and a selection of those songs that the people love from us.

LAST QUESTION, SUM UP YOUR SOUND IN 3 WORDS:

Emotional, eclectic, melodic.

Booka Shade is kind enough to throw in 5 tracks that are currently exciting them, and we imagine that they are quite likely to be played at their set in Ku De Ta when they come to Bali. And we think you should check it out!

Booka Shade feat Kaktus Einarsson - I Go, I Go
We met Kaktus on a festival in Ireland last year where he played with his band and he told us that he saw our first show in his home country Iceland in the aula of his school. When we were in production of the song ”I Go, I Go“ we thought that his voice would be a perfect fit for the song...and it was.

Rüfüs - Underwater (Adam Port Remix)
We‘ve heard the first time from Rüfus when they played a coverversion of our song ”Charlotte“ on the radio station Triple J in Australia. Great guys, great band... Adam Port from the Einmusik Label is doing a fabulous job here...Organic and electronic in a perfect combination..

Laurent Garnier - Acid Eiffel
One of our all time classics...These were the days when we drove from our little town in the South of Germany to Frankfurt to listen to Godfather Sven Väth in the omen nightclub. Nice memories listening to Acid Eiffel and feeling the anticipation to have a great night in THE techno club of the nineties.

Arm In Arm - Nightfly
Arm In Arm are Luke Moore-Martin and Eliza Jacobs, a couple from Australia and very good longtime friends of ours. We signed them for our label Blaufield and this was the first single. Sublime atmosphere and a great video. Watch out for their new single on Blaufield. Hit the world 22nd of March.

Agoria - Youre Not Alone (Solomun Remix)
Solomun never dissapoints with his remixes. We love the 80’s feel of the synths. There is a reason why he is one of the most successful DJs on the planet.

Thank you so much Booka Shade for your selection. And we can't wait to see you perform at Ku De Ta on the 14th of March 2019
