GOING IN DEEP WITH THE ILLUSTRIOUS BLACKS

Many months ago two magnificent and relatively unheard of performers came to Bali and performed at KU DE TA’s infamous Forbidden Fruit party and stole the show with a stellar performance so magnificent and fun, the ground literally shook...They were THE ILLUSTRIOUS BLACKS!

Ok, so there was an actual earthquake during the last track of the set but most the venue were so busy getting down it passed by without anyone noticing!

These guys take DJ sets back, waaaay back, to how it used to be in the hedonistic days of house music when people dressed up, got down, and partied together as a vibrant, colourful and sweaty organism throwing caution to the wind and enjoying life and music to the god damn max!

The Illustrious Blacks - Revolutionary Love

Well it is with great anticipation and eternal gratitude that we are able to get down with the illustrious ones once again as they return to KU DE TA for a very very welcome return on Saturday, 2nd of March 2019!

If you like to party, and you are NOT at this event then you are really missing out!

We managed to speak to the guys and ask them some questions about what’s happening in their Technicolor illustrious world since they last came to play in Bali… enjoy!!!

DESPITE THE FACT YOU ARE ONE OF OUR FAVOURITE ACTS ANYWHERE RIGHT NOW AND YOU TOTALLY OWNED BALI LAST TIME YOU CAME HERE, FOR THOSE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU, PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF AND WHO DOES WHAT WHEN YOU ARE DOING YOU THING ON STAGE…

Thank you so much for the kind words!

MANCHILDBLACK: My name is Manchildblack.

MONSTAH BLACK: My name is Monstah Black.

BOTH: Together we are The Illustrious Blacks!!! We are co-pilots on an Afrofuturistic journey through sights and sounds, with Manchild making magic on the turntables and Monstah conjuring the vibes.

YOUR WARDROBE GAME IS STRONG TO SAY THE LEAST! WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR WONDERFUL OUTFITS FROM AND WHO DESIGNS THEM?

We dream up otherworldly ideas and Monstah makes them reality by using found items and creating custom designed garments. We also sometimes work with this amazing designer out of NYC, Claire Fleury.

YOU GUYS ARE A THROWBACK TO WHAT HOUSE MUSIC USED TO BE ABOUT… GREAT FUN, ANYTHING GOES VIBES AND GREAT MUSIC. WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION TO DO WHAT YOU DO, AND HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE CURRENT STATE OF THE SCENE… IS IT TOO MUCH ABOUT BUSINESS THESE DAYS?

One of the things we bonded over when we first met was a fascination with New York City nightlife culture of the 70s, 80s and 90s, which was about people from different backgrounds coming together under one roof to celebrate life through music and dancing. We strive to bring that spirit of inclusion, togetherness and joy each time we play or perform. It does sometimes feel as if those aspects get lost in the business of it all. We have to remember that business is good, but only if it's mixed with pleasure.

THERE IS A HIGHLY ANTICIPATED DOCUMENTARY ABOUT TO DROP ABOUT THE HISTORY OF DETROIT AND THE FOCUS IS ON THE FACT THAT BLACK ARTISTS WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BIRTH OF THE SCENE YET NOW MOST THE HIGHEST PAID ACTS WERE WHITE… WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS?

It’s true. It should not be that the very people who created and first championed the sound are now unable to prosper from it. Two years ago we co-produced a festival in Brooklyn with the purpose of showcasing and celebrating black and brown DJs and artists in electronic music. Although we truly believe music is for everyone, it has to be acknowledged that the Godfather of House was a black gay man and that the founders of Detroit Techno were also black. These facts should not be distorted or swept under the rug. The music was born out of their blood, sweat, tears, talents, dreams and truth. They were truly Afrofuturists and their contributions must never be forgotten.

THERE IS NO BETTER FEELING WHEN YOU DISCOVER A NEW ACT THAT BLOWS YOUR FUCKING MIND, LIKE YOU GUYS DID. WHO HAS BLOWN YOUR MINDS IN THE LAST YEAR OR TWO YOU SUGGEST OUR FOLLOWERS GO AND CHECK OUT RIGHT ABOUT NOW?

People we live for:

WHAT’S BEEN YOUR MOST NIGHTMARE MOMENT PERFORMING LIVE?

Monstah: My nightmare moment was performing a song of an artist I’ve looked up to since childhood while she was in the audience. I entered the stage and within the first verse I locked eyes with her and for the remainder of the verse I had absolutely no ideas what the lyrics were.”

Manchildblack: My nightmare moment was witnessing Monstah completely forget the lyrics to a song while paying tribute to a legendary artist.

HOW MUCH HAS CHANGED FOR YOU GUYS SINCE YOU LAST CAME TO BALI? WE ASSUME A LOT AS MORE AND MORE PEOPLE DISCOVER YOUR MAGICAL COSMIC ILLUSTRIOUSNESS!

Everything has been greatly accelerated! We’ve been able to perform and meet beautiful light beings from different parts of the world and have been granted opportunities we dreamed of. Everyday we fly high in the orbit of our gratitude.

Lorant ft. The Illustrious Blacks - Delusions of Grandeur

HOW HARD IS IT BEING MARRIED TO EACH OTHER WHEN YOU WORK SO MUCH TOGETHER. IS IT A BLESSING, A CHALLENGE OR BOTH?

It’s not hard often enough...just kidding!  It’s a blessing that comes with challenges. But, now we recognize when the challenge is coming. So, we make a detour back to laughter, communicate about the challenge so that we can move forward as a unit.

IF YOU WROTE A TRACK WITH DONALD TRUMP IN MIND, WHAT WOULD YOU CALL IT?

Orange Is Not The New Black.

LAST TIME YOU PLAYED THE EARTH LITERALLY SHOOK AS YOU PLAYED YOUR LAST TRACK…COINCIDENCE OR THE UNIVERSE, AND ARE YOU SPIRITUAL GUYS?

It was surreal to experience an earthquake right at the very moment we finished our set at Ku De Ta. That was our first time feeling the earth shake, and we’re not interested in feeling it again. We are spiritual beings who enjoy having our feet grounded by this earthly experience.

ARE YOU PLANNING ON SPENDING MORE TIME IN BALI THIS TIME ROUND AND IF SO CAN WE COME WITH YOU!?!?

We love living the hype life in Bali and you’re more than welcome to blast off with us! Ubud is a desired destination this time around.

HAVE YOU HAD A CHANCE TO MAKE MORE MUSIC SINCE THE LAST TIME WE SAW YOU?

We are currently working on a new album to be released in summer of 2019. They’ll be new Illustrious tracks played within our set, so you must come to the shows to get a taste.

SUM UP THE ILLUSTRIOUS BLACKS IN 3 WORDS?

Aerodynamic Supernova Stars.

Thank you so much, Monstah Black and Manchildblack for spending time to answer our questions! We really can't wait to see you perform!!
