SECRET BALI SOUNDBOY #33 JAMES SULLIVAN

James Sullivan is a DJ from the Old Skool who goes about his business without looking for fame and followers but simply loves playing out and loves music. Many people on the island are probably not familiar with James but he has been involved in the scene here for over 15 years in both Jakarta and Bali.

Originally hailing from West London in the UK James is resident at KU DE TA and Rock Bar amongst others and we asked him to take time out to answer a few questions about his time in Indonesia and the scene in general…

HI JAMES, TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BALI AND WHERE WERE YOU BEFORE THAT?
I'm from West London originally, I started coming to Indonesia in 1999, I moved to Jakarta permanently in 2003 to explore some opportunities that had opened up for me and I’ve lived in Bali since around 2009.

WHAT’S YOUR MUSICAL BACKGROUND?
My sister used to drag me out to acid jazz and soul nights around West London which is how I got into the music.

I started DJ'ing when I was 16 and borrowed some money to buy some technics 1200’s, mixer, speakers, amp and a stack of new vinyl. My parents weren’t too impressed, we had a huge row over the debt I’d taken on and I ended up moving out to my friends house and we set up all the equipment there and had a week long party.

ARE THERE ANY CHANGES IN THE INDONESIAN ELECTRONIC MUSIC SCENE SINCE YOU ARRIVED HERE AND WHAT CHANGED?
Yeah the scene has changed enormously over the last few years, Bali is on another level compared to the rest of Indonesia when it comes to music and I can’t see it slowing down anytime soon.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE VENUE TO PLAY AT IN BALI?
Has to be KU DE TA, I get the chance to play so much music that I really wouldn’t be able to play in many other places in the world.

WHO ARE YOUR INSPIRATIONS, MUSICALLY?
So many influences...Where to start ? SHOOM club in London, RAGE with Fabio & Grooverider, going to Body and Soul in NYC and hearing Francois K, Joe Claussell & Danny Krivit.

Shirley Brown - A Mighty Good Feeling

Zero 7 - Destiny

Grover Washington Jr. - Knucklehead

WHICH DJ WOULD YOU LOVE TO SEE IN BALI WHO HAS NEVER BEEN?
Ron Trent – Legend!

WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME WHEN YOU’RE NOT DJ’ING?
Enjoying life!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE BALINESE OR INDONESIAN DISH?
Padang food especially Rendang when its good.

IS THERE A SPECIFIC PLACE IN BALI THAT YOU GO TO RELAX AND UNWIND? WHERE IS IT?
Mi casa

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, WHERE CAN WE SEE YOU PLAY IN THE NEAR FUTURE?
KU DE TA, Rock Bar, Azul and the odd other gig around town.

Thanks a bunch and we'll see you around, James!
