SECRET BALI SOUNDBOY #32 ONES

In recent weeks a wonderful new addition to the Bali DJ roster has landed on these shores… DJ Ones! This guy was a local legend in the artistic and music hotspot that is Jogjakarta. Not only is a he a bonafide DJ with a collection and understanding of the craft way beyond most but he was also the driving force behind a great promotion called CASUAL DANCE in Jogjakarta. Now part of the Tantrà Collective we pinned him down to answer a few questions about himself, the music scene and more!!

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF, HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BALI AND WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE YOU MOVED HERE?
I've been in Bali for about 4 moths, before that I was living in Yogyakarta for 20 years. I can say that I grew up there as I studied formally and informally about life.

ARE YOU PLANNING TO STAY IN BALI LONG TERM?
I would like to say Yes for now because Bali is a new and challenging place for me.

YOGYAKARTA IS THRIVING WITH ITS YOUTH ART AND CULTURE MOVEMENT AT THE MOMENT. DO YOU MIND TELLING A LITTLE ABOUT THE SCENE IN YOGYAKARTA AND WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SCENE THERE AND HERE?
Yogyakarta is city destination for education, there’s a lot of young people from all over Indonesia that come there to study. Yogyakarta is so diverse but very small, you can easily meet artists that are working on projects together. I would say, because Jogja is small, people are really open to any projects.

The difference is; Bali is the industry, it's the place where you can practice what your’ve learned and Yogyakarta is the place where you study and do some research.

YOU RUN A NIGHT IN JOGJA CALLED CASUAL DANCE THAT’S ALWAYS THE TALK OF THE TOWN, ARE YOU STILL RUNNING THEM? ARE YOU GOING TO MAKE THEM IN BALI?
Casual Dance belongs in Yogyakarta, it is between me and Galuh Anindita. We want to present something diferent in the terms of partying, and now I can see that’s there’s a lot of party that have same vision as us. Casual Dance will always gonna be a fun part to do in our life, and we will always gonna do that in Jogja.

(Taken from Casual Dance where Ones is always the centre of musical attention amongst the local party goers!)

IF THERE’S ANYTHING FROM JOGJA THAT YOU COULD TAKE WITH YOU TO BALI, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
That would be Soto Kadipiro.

TELL US SOMETHING THAT PEOPLE NEVER REALLY KNOW ABOUT YOURSELF…
I don’t know how to define music genre in dance music.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO ON YOUR SPARE TIME?
Riding, watching movies or just doing nothing on the beach.

DO YOU HAVE ANY PROJECTS COMING UP THAT WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?
A couple of projects at Tantrà. As well as of DJ'ing or making parties, we also make a web radio called PADDYGROOVES, it’s an online radio where we do live program from Monday to Thursday, 16.00 – 22.00. Also there's a couple of project that I still want to do in Jogja, such as Casual Dance and Happy Swinging.

WHO’S THE BEST INDONESIAN DJ AND PRODUCERS IN THE CONTEMPORARY ELECTRONIC SCENE IN YOUR OPINION?
Some people that I know like Kasimyn from Gabber Modus Operandi and Harsya Wahono from Divisi 62, but if Wukir Suryadi can produce electronic music, I will choose him.

GIVE US 3 TRACKS FROM THE INDONESIAN ELECTRONIC MUSIC DJ THAT WE SHOULD BE LISTENING TO?

Akamady Records - Collage

Gabber Modus Operandi - Dosa Besar

Archie - Not Afraid To (Edit)

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, WHERE CAN PEOPLE CATCH YOU PLAY IN THE NEAREST FUTURE?
I spend more time in the office right now at Tantra, but if you want to see me, maybe at Luigi’s on Saturday or SugarSand for sunset set?

Last but not least, please enjoy one of Ones' set from his own awesome night... Casual Dance!
