SECRET BALI SOUNDBOY #31 ARCHIE

Archie is one of the most recognised DJ’s across all of Indonesia as well as Bali. Spinning for 10 years now he has been synonymous with some of the best parties across the country both as a sought after DJ as well as an event organiser. One of the Tantra Collective and key players behind the SCRUBS! In his hometown of Jakarta Archie is also now a mainstay resident at Potato Head Beach Club in Bali.

Also busy in the studio he has been and will continue to be one of the key cogs in the alternative electronic music scene in Bali for many years to come we have no doubt. Notoriously difficult to pin down with his busy schedule we managed to finally do so so he could answer a few questions and give us an awesome recently complied mix for Secret Bali Life!

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BALI AND WHAT BROUGHT YOU HERE?

Hello! I’ve been here for about 3 and a half years now and I’m super grateful that I made the right decision to move here. I got offered a job as a web programmer back then, so I took it. I worked remotely from Jakarta for about 2 months, and decided to move because I hated waking up an hour earlier because of the time difference and just to sit and work alone in my room. Now I have this perfect balance between work, music and I also live really close to the beach.

HOW DOES THE MUSIC SCENE IN BALI DIFFER FROM JAKARTA AND IF YOU HAD A MAGIC WAND WHAT WOULD YOU DO TO CHANGE THEM?

Each has its own scene really. For example, I would say there’s no such thing as a sunset set in Jakarta. It’s the worst time of day in Jakarta where people are rushing home from work in horrible traffic and you can barely see the sun; most venues are empty around this time too. It’s the exact opposite in Bali because here, most places are booked at this time because people want to go out and catch the sunset, which is usually always amazing.

As for Jakarta there are a number of well known collectives who have paved the way for the music scene and it’s getting even more interesting these past few years because loads of new collectives of DJ’s and music producers have emerged and they’re constantly pushing their sounds. I can see the impact of this regeneration in Jakarta as well as these collectives not only inspire people to create their art but it helps connect us better. We end up making new friends who share the same passion in music and it’s like having this new family and I wouldn’t have if I wasn’t involved in a collective as well. For me it makes me feel closer to others and more focused than ever. Strength by numbers does matter! While in Bali, I can only mention a few who actually does this.

As for the magic wand, I’m not sure I would change anything about the two. I enjoy their differences.

YOU ARE INVOLVED IN SOME REALLY COOL COLLECTIVES, TELL US ABOUT THEM AND WHAT YOU DO, AND WHAT YOU ARE WORKING ON CURRENTLY..

I’m so lucky that I have one family called SCRUBS! in Jakarta, one called Tantrà in Bali and the other one is a record label called Darker Than Wax that’s based in Singapore. I’ve been a fan of their genre-bending mixes and radio shows so when DTW (Darker Than Wax) asked me to join in 2013, it was an easy yes for me. My role there is a music selector.

We formed SCRUBS! about 4 years ago with Bergas, Herta and Gaeri. It started off as a random project that we just wanted to do, but we were surprised on the outcome. Feedback and support from everyone has been great so we kept pushing it. I also run a mini re-edit label under the banner SCRBS where we share free downloads for all the ears and constant dancing from the crowd, as our token of appreciation. We’re going to have our 4th anniversary in March, so expect a new release and this time we got very special guests contributing too!

(Bergas and Archie)

I’m also happy to have role at Tantra who have been constantly doing their thing since day 1. The creative behind Tantra are good friends of mine here in Bali and are constantly providing and creating outlets for musical passions on the island. I help out with events and creative projects as well as run a radio show called “Therapy” at Paddy Grooves radio under Tantra where the music focuses on ambient, bass, spacing and all spectrums in between.

As for myself, I’m currently working on my long overdue EP and hope to release soon.

I’m pretty much happy here in Bali, but if I had to move I’ll definitely choose Holland so that I can be closer to my family.

WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE INDONESIAN DJS AND WHY?

Oh… There’s a lot…

Bayu – Based in Melbourne, his music taste is impeccable and I would say helped me shape my sound.

Sattle – Super underrated. A very good DJ, producer, and a humble soul. His EP is coming out sometime this year so definitely keep an eye on it.

Ones – He never fails to amaze.

Ridwan Susanto – My personal favorite from Dekadenz crew.

Django – From the mighty DIVISI62. One of the most versatile DJ that I know.

The list can go on…

WHATS YOUR SECRET SPOT IN BALI WHERE YOU GO TO ESCAPE?

There’s a spot where I always take my girlfriend and my dog. But it’s a secret, right?

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT BALI WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Actually I would like for DJ's here to get higher fees but it’s a sensitive topic… so, more parking lots…. ? haha
