GOING IN DEEP WITH ASH AT HARD ROCK CAFE BALI

Nostalgia for the good ol’ 90s will once again be set alight with the arrival of UK indie legends ASH. Hard Rock Café Bali, as the island’s top venue for live music performances from top-tier headliners, will play host as the Northern Irish band is prep to hit their stage on Saturday, November 24, with an opening act by none other than Indonesian indie veterans Rumah Sakit!

With the Hard Rock Café Bali celebrating their 25th anniversary this year, ASH’s début visit to Bali seems like a perfect fit as the band’s rise to fame happens occurred a mere year earlier—both prominent musical fixtures from the 90s that remain a powerhouse until today.

The 90s revival is indeed in full swing these days, and ASH, one of Britpop’s poster boys along with the period’s anthem-churners Oasis and Blur, is also making a comeback with their latest album, Islands, garnering favorable reviews.

Still manned by the original members—vocalist/guitarist Tim Wheeler, bassist Mark Hamilton, drummer Rick McMurray—the band has transitioned from being power pop performers to full-blown indie rock, though perhaps for most people the infectiously rambunctious Girl from Mars (1995) will always be THE song.

Of course, ASH is more than that, radio-friendly track with Jack Names the Planets, Goldfinger, Kung Fu, Oh Yeah, Shining Light, the A-Z singles and many more notable singles that define their illustrious career. Their first official album, 1977 (released in 1996), was even ranked as one of the 500 greatest albums of all time by NME.

Meanwhile, the Jakarta-based Rumah Sakit (or hospital in Indonesian) will also be making their Hard Rock Café debut on the island. The band—Arief Bakri (vocals), Marky (guitar), Mickey (keyboard), Sadam (bass), and Fadli (drum)—started rocking the local music industry way back in 1994 and was Indonesia’s rep in the Britpop/alternative indie rock scene with singles like Nol Derajat, Hilang, Kuning, Beku Anomali, Duniawi, and 3:56.

So far Rumahsakit has only released three albums: Rumahsakit (1997), Nol Derajat (2000), and +imeless (2015), and though they’ve lost their frontman, Andri LMS, they found an equally dreamy vocalist in Arif—whom they discovered from Soundcloud no less!

For sure, these two indie rock icons are guaranteed performances you wouldn’t want to miss! Save the date as Ash and Rumahsakit will rock the stage at Hard Rock Café Bali on November 24.
