SECRET BALI SOUNDBOY #29 KEMBAR BULAN

Starting out in Jakarta in 2001 Kembar bucked the musical trend for the city by ignoring commercial sounds and following his heart, searching for the more alternative and cooler sounds of house and disco. This resulted in him soon being picked up to play at several of the cities key venues and festivals and eventually his musical journey landed him on the shores of Bali.

Kembar is another member of the growing army of credible Indonesian DJ’s who are up there with the best of their western counterparts and we were stoked we managed to pin him down to answer a few questions regarding his time in Bali and the music scene in Indonesia…

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BALI AND WHERE ARE YOU FROM ORIGINALLY?
I am from Jakarta, and I've moved to the island about 5 years ago.

WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU SEEN ON THE MUSIC SCENE IN YOUR TIME HERE?
When I first arrive, there are not that many places, and almost all the beachside place will only play reggae music and commercial music. But now there are many new places and they play different style of music.

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO PLAY AND WHY?
Mano Beach House. Because the atmosphere there feels like home and it's very comfortable.

HAVE YOU NOTICED ANY CHANGE IN INDONESIAN DJ'S IN THE LAST FEW YEARS AND IF SO WHAT?
Well, now they are many more Indonesian DJs on the island, talented ones with good taste in music.

HOW DOES BALI DIFFER TO JAKARTA'S MUSIC SCENE?
Jakarta has a slightly different trend in terms of music, most places only play commercial music, and only a few would play house, techno, or disco.

WHAT ONE THING WOULD YOU CHANGE ABOUT THE MUSIC SCENE IN BALI IF YOU WERE GIVEN THE CHANCE?
I don't think I will change anything, I will just let time flow as I think the scene in Bali is growing faster than before.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE WORST REQUEST YOU HAVE EVER HAD FROM SOMEONE WHILST PLAYING?
Oh this is crazy... I got someone came up to me and ask for ‘Happy Birthday’. Haha...
