A Tribute To Aray Daulay

It is with a heavy heart, as the editor of Secret Bali Life that I write this piece, as last week we lost a really good one. Both as a character and a performer Aray Daulay was a genuine star on the island of the Gods.

Aray had enjoyed a lot of success over the years in Jakarta, Indonesia, Australia and beyond and most recently in Bali where he settled. He played with several famous Indonesian bands, as a guitarist, a front man and also as a solo performer. He was able to play almost every genre from rock, reggae to blues effortlessly and had a wonderful aura on stage giving him a natural ability lead a band and engage with the audience.

Secret Bali Life supported Aray on a number of occasions for single releases, album launches, music video premiers and his infectious smile was always welcome when he would drop in to our office from time to time for a coffee and a catch up with news of his upcoming plans.

One such time was for the feature we have attached below, and the fact Aray was our first ever non-DJ Secret Bali Soundboy is another testament to the man.

I think in my time in Bali I have never seen such a tremendous outpouring on social media as last week when the sudden and terrible news broke about his untimely passing, which is a testament to how many people Aray had effected positively over the years both as a friend, a performer and a musician.

Aray Daulay… you will be so very sorely missed and it still almost feels surreal you have gone so soon and so suddenly, but now you can shine as brightly above us, as you did as a star on the stage. I for one will never be able to listen to Bright Lights In The City without thinking of you and you can rest assured we certainly all know your fucking name brother!!!

Love you for ever from myself and all the Secret Bali Life team x

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BALI AND WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE YOU CAME HERE?

I've been in Bali for three years now already. At first I was based in Jakarta before moving to Australia for a few years. I kept on doing back and forths to Indonesia though and finally decided to come back and live in Bali.

TELL US ABOUT THIS ALBUM YOU ARE ABOUT TO RELEASE?

The title of the album is 'Lagu Perjalanan'. It's a reflection of my music journey since the 90's till now.

IF YOU COULD ASK ANYONE FROM ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD TO PERFORM ON YOUR ALBUM, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD BE YOUR DREAM COLLABORATORS?

hhhmmm maybe Keith Richards or Iwan Fals hehe :)

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE LIVE MUSIC SCENE IN JAKARTA AND BALI?

Same same but different as the saying goes I guess. Can't really say what the difference is but I like both Jakarta's and Bali's music scene.

WHAT'S THE MOST NIGHTMARE THING THAT HAS HAPPENED AT A GIG YOU WERE PERFORMING AT?

My most nightmare moment would be when a gig would get cancelled with no good reason or when the sound system is really bad at a gig that I have.

WHAT'S THE BEST NEW SONG YOU'VE HEARD IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS?

Ipang Lazuardi - Disini Senang

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE SONG TO PERFORM?

USUALLY WE ASK DJ'S AT THIS POINT TO SUPPLY US WITH A MIX BUT WE WANT YOU TO GIVE US THREE OF YOUR OWN MUSIC VIDEOS INSTEAD!
