Going In Deep With Wake Up Call Festival

There is a massive new addition to the Bali Party calendar this year which everyone really ought to sit up and pay attention to thanks to the guys and girls at the W Bali called the Wake Up Call. Usually it is the SPF party which gets all the headlines but this year the W brand are rolling out this new initiative across three of their flagship venues including Hollywood and Barcelona before stopping off in Bali!

The line-up for this event is considerable to say the least and really has something credible for everyone from the indie duo Angus & Julia Stone through to the electronic wizardry of the likes of Christoph and M.A.N.D.Y.
The event is set to take place over two stages plus the Woobase nightclub guaranteeing a genuine festival vibe in the spacious and beautiful grounds of the W… just watch out for those swimming pools!

We took time out to interview the main music man at the W Bali in Damian Saint and also have compiled a Spotify Playlist of all the acts taking part in this incredible line-up and as if it wasn't enough the W Bali have very kindly given us permission to give away not one but TWO pairs of weekend passes for this blockbuster event valued at 1.3m IDR each pass!

DAMIAN SAINT

Having left the UK at 21 to open Ministry of Sound in Bangkok, Taipei and Singapore, Damian has been at the forefront of the Asian house music scene for 20 years now. Track selector, Music Director, and bullshit detector, his straight talking attitude, softened only by his passion for the music, has earned him the respect of industry heavy hitters at both the global and local level, and he is set to remain one of the key components of the house and techno scene in Asia into perpetuity.

CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOURSELF PERSONALLY AND YOUR ROLE WITHIN THE W BALI – SEMINYAK AND FOR THE WAKE UP CALL EVENT ITSELF?

Hi I’m Damian Saint; Sound Suite & Music Curator at W Bali – Seminyak. The property is still going strong after seven years of ever-evolving collection of exclusive experiences, happenings and creative talents. Wake Up Call will touch down and close out at W Bali – Seminyak on 5th-6th October 2018 and we have a huge line-up starting with Tove Lo, Angus and Julia Stone, Sam Feldt, FKJ, Cristoph and many more. This will be the biggest event of the year, since the festival will take place over 2 days! We are targeting our SPG and Marriott Rewards members who have the possibility to participate in exclusive events during the festival but also guests from outside the hotel - all to bring people closer to the music they love.

HOW DID THIS EVENT COME ABOUT AS THE SPF EVENT IS WELL KNOWN AS YOUR FLAGSHIP EVENT BUT IT WOULD APPEAR THIS WILL BE A MUCH BIGGER BEAST AND A WELCOME ADDITION TO THE BALI PARTY CALENDAR FOR SURE?

This is a global roll out event. The series makes stops at three W Hotels this year: W Hollywood, W Barcelona and will close out at W Bali – Seminyak (Oct 5- 6). WAKE UP CALL takes the festival experience off the field and onto hotel grounds. It’s different to SPF, we own that, it’s W Bali – Seminyak’s annual summer party, and we don’t charge for the event. Wake Up Call will be much bigger. I am sure, this event will attract attention of partygoers from Bali, Jakarta but also from everywhere in South East Asia and Australia.

YOU HAVE BEEN VERY CLEVER WITH YOUR CURATION FOR THIS EVENT WITH SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE FROM THE LIVE FOLK MUSIC OF ANGUS & JULIA STONE ALL THE WAY THROUGH TO INDONESIAN ELECTRONIC POP SENSATION KIMOKAL.. WHO CURATED THE LINE-UP , HOW DIFFICULT WAS IT TO PUT TOGETHER AND WHICH ACTS ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST?

The WAKE UP CALL experience will go well beyond music, serving up the W experience every step of the way. W is indeed a very vibrant and energetic brand and our hotel is known for its colourful scene and enthusiastic nightlife. Our global team has planned and curated the line-up together with myself, so I provide them with a selection that suits our hotel and guests. For instance, the Aussie indie siblings Angus and Julia Stone, they are big and have a lot of fans here; and when they just announced Tove Lo, we saw the reaction of the younger crowd getting excited about it. We have a good balance between the DJs, live performances and are catering to the local market with Indonesian musicians like Kimokal. Personally, I’m looking forward most to see M.A.N.D.Y. , Cristoph and The Drifter.

WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE EXPECT ON THE DAY FROM THE EVENT? HOW MANY STAGES WILL THERE BE AND WILL THERE BE ANY OTHER ENTERTAINMENT ON SHOW FOR PEOPLE ATTENDING?

Festival goers can expect everything from workout sessions like Yoga in the morning, experience the unique dishes from our F&B team, cocktails created by mixologists, or bringing back the 180 degree Photobooth on the island for the more creative photoshoot! Wake Up Call combines the pre-party, the party, and the post-party, all in one perk-filled package!

AN INTERESTING ASPECT OF THIS EVENT IS THE FACT YOU CAN BUY A HOTEL PACKAGE WHICH MAKES A LOT OF SENSE AND NO DOUBT ALLEVIATES THE PRESSURE OF KEEPING THE NOISE DOWN FOR THE GUESTS THAT MUST BE AN ISSUE ON SOME OF YOUR OTHER BIG OUTDOOR EVENTS… TELL US MORE ABOUT THAT.

We have blocked all the rooms only for this event, so all the guests who will be staying with us during the period will be enjoying the party as we are giving two bracelets to enter the 2 days festival with the room. So no worries about the noise as everyone will be here to have a great time watching the show on the 2 stages until late before moving down to Woobase.

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE YOU EXPECTING FOR THIS EVENT?

We are looking at around 3,000 guests per day as beside the hotel packages, we also sell the daily and weekend passes online.

NORMALLY W EVENTS ARE SYNONYMOUS WITH BEING FREE ENTRY AFFAIRS, WAS IT A DIFFICULT DECISION TO BREAK THE MOULD FOR THE WAKE UP CALL?

For SPF we never charge entrance, but we do charge for New Year’s Eve for instance, so we do have both depending on the event. For Wake Up Call we do have different passes options, including early bird and weekend passes to offer an attractive rate to all.

IF IT WAS UP TO YOU AND MONEY WAS NO OBJECT GIVE US ONE MORE ACT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE AT THE WAKE UP CALL?

I would have love to have Nils Frahm.

TOVE LO

Swedish singer and songwriter, Tove Lo, burst onto the international music scene in 2015. Her first single “Habits (Stay High)” reached #1 on the Billboard top 40 chart in the US, and her debut album Queen of the Clouds went platinum in multiple markets. ANGUS & JULIA STONE

Since sibblings, Angus & Julia Stone, began performing together in 2006, their story has unfolded with an almost magical magnetism that has galvanized the world. Their albums have amassed multi-platinum sales and numerous ARIA and APRA awards, and won a fan base of millions along their tours of the UK, Europe and North America. The acclaimed sibling duo just performed to over 50,000 fans on their recent 2018 Australian tour, playing Sold Out shows nationally, their largest local tour to date.

SAM FELDT

Platinum-selling Dutch DJ, producer and entrepreneur, Sam Feldt has become one of the most sought after electronic artists of recent times due to his crossover sound. His breakthrough in 2014 was a rework of Robin S’ "Show Me Love", reaching over 80 million Spotify plays. In 2017, he dropped his hotly anticipated debut album From Sunrise To Sunset. Sam is known for playing the biggest festivals such as Coachella and Ultra Music Festival and this year, with the addition of his live band, you can catch him at the mainstages at Tomorrowland, Mysteryland, Sziget, Nature One and again alongside Kygo at Ushuaïa Ibiza.

FKJ

Vincent Fenton, musically known as French Kiwi Juice, or FKJ, started composing songs at 13 and recorded his first track at 14, in his uncle’s studio. FKJ is an accomplished musician who plays the guitar, bass, saxophone, piano and more. FKJ was revealed in 2013 by his single “Lying Together” followed by two EPs, “Time For A Change” released in 2013, and “Take Off” in 2014. Today, FKJ performs across the world, including Asia, North America and Europe, thus allowing him to continue expanding his fan base.

KLINGANDE

Cedric Steinmyller, best known as Klingande, has been breathing new life into the electronic music world with impeccable productions and uplifting sound. In 2013 his hit, "Jubel" propelled the young producer into the spotlight. The record has over 150 million views on YouTube, 21 million plays on SoundCloud and 176 million on Spotify. With 2018 set to become Klingande’s most successful year, he will return with his hybrid live show, incorporating his DJ sets alongside live Saxophone, Violin, and Guitar performances.

NORA EN PURE

Nora En Pure is the deep house and indie dance music sensation rippling through the sonic sphere. She has played sets at Ultra Music Festival and held residencies at Privilege Ibiza and Marquee Dayclub Las Vegas. In 2017 she delivered an array of releases, including her Conquer Yosemite EP, "Waves" and "Fever". After making her debut at Coachella, she closed the year on an all-time high. With a long list of major festival and club appearances on the horizon, Nora En Pure will continue to deliver the finest dance music all year long.

MARIBOU STATE

Chris Davis and Liam Ivory, better known as Maribou State, have steadily built a glowing international reputation via a string of well-loved EPs, and a fistful of remixes since 2011. The past 18 months they have spent dedicated to touring around the UK, Europe, the US and Australia. They have performed at GlastonburyWarehouse Project and Bestival. The two producers have worked to evolve and forge a unique and soulful marriage of the organic and synthetic, showcased on their forthcoming debut.

M.A.N.D.Y.

Patrick Bodmer, better known as M.A.N.D.Y., is an electronic musician, and a pop star in his own right. Having founded independent label, Get Physical, alongside Thomas Koch (aka DJ T) and Booka Shade in 2002, he went on to release a string of singles including, “Body Language”. In 2016, M.A.N.D.Y’s debut album Double Fantasy was released, with guest features from musicians diverse in culture and genre. 2018 has seen a slightly altered vision, with a renewed focus on bringing things back to the club.

NIGHTMARES ON WAX

Nightmares on Wax became one of the brightest spots on the post-rave British techno map of the early ’90s. NoW’s first singles, "Dextrous" and "Aftermath," were both highly regarded, and the latter shot into the U.K. pop singles Top 40. For the next few years NoW would take a hiatus, but emerge stronger than before. To celebrate 25 years, "N.O.W. Is the Time", hit the music scene in 2013. Since then, the Ground Floor EP, was released along with the first of many singles from the early-2018 set Shape the Future.

SLOW MAGIC

Slow Magic is universal and inclusive. After the release of 2012’s beloved and critically-acclaimed Triangle, Slow Magic became an international movement after touring with artists like Gold Panda and XXYYXX. Their lead singles "Girls" and "Hold Still" sculpts elastic organs and jazz piano into an emotionally-pummeling finale, while the melancholy "Let U Go" merges watery dub with spectral piano and "Closer" plays like a ’90s R&B fever dream. Slow Magic is music by your imaginary friend.

CHRISTOPH

There’s a new titan in the world of progressive house, and his name is Cristoph. The mysterious producer has proven himself a bona fide force to be reckoned with landmark releases on imprints like Last Night on Earth and Bedrock. He’s officially joined the Pryda family, becoming the first artist to sign to Prydz’s brand new imprint, Pryda Presents. It’s a definitive nod of approval from one of the scene’s most celebrated tastemakers, and a surefire mark of his blossoming career.

KIMOKAL

KimoKal is the recording name of the duo, Kimo Rizky and Kallula Harsynta Esterlita conjoined. Boldly staking out from a different depth of Indonesia’s music scene and transcends any notions of genre, drawing from psychedelic, nu-wave, dub, electronic, nu-disco, ballad and pop but refusing to be attributed to one particular tag whilst conveying an impressive collage of electronic textures simultaneously. KimoKal is now working on their sophomore album that scheduled to be released later this year.

THE DRIFTER

After an upbringing in different musical pursuits, The Drifter, found a love for electronic music from ventures into Dublin nightlife. He released his first solo work, the "Lovers" EP on Permanent Vacation in late 2012. Beginning to add his own vocals to tracks caught the attention of some of his peers, resulting in him recording vocals for Jacob Korn, Slow Hands, Good Guy Mikesh & Filburt, and Baikal. Through his DJ style and productions, The Drifter has proven and continues to prove that he is one to watch.
