SECRET BALI SOUNDBOY #26 DJ JOEY FITZGERALD

Joey Fitzgerald is one of the most revered DJ’s on the island. A resident at Potato Head and various other leading venues, Joey landed in Bali almost 4 years ago and we are extremely grateful he did. He followed in his brother's footsteps who was here until earlier this year and with a background in both live and electronic music he certainly knows his music better than most!

He is also one of the funniest characters you could wish to meet, so we were very much looking forward to his Soundboy feature and he did not disappoint…

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BALI AND WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE YOU LANDED HERE?

Yo! I've been here for almost four years, which has flown by. I came here after leaving uni, during which time I was playing in bands and working odd jobs in bars and coffee shops back in Liverpool.

WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE GIGS FROM BOTH SIDE OF THE DECKS?

The most fun I've had in Bali was at Horse Meat Disco at Potato Head, however, music wise any time Dea Barandana has a dance floor, he's genuinely one of the best DJs working right now. Playing after Disclosure was interesting, with 4000 people there for commercial music and having me close, it was fun seeing so many bods grooving to tunes they probably hadn't heard before.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE MUSIC YOU PLAY?

Anything as long as it's good. I really love disco and good house music, but what I'm playing can depend on the time of day, the punters and my mood. I play a lot of vocal tunes but only if the lyrics match the vibe.

GIVE US A GUILTY PLEASURE PIECE OF MUSIC YOU ENJOY LISTENING TO...

I'm a huge fan of pop music so I don't feel guilty for anything ha! One day there's going to be a sunset so good I can get away with playing “This Woman's Work” by Kate Bush. That day hasn't come yet.

IF YOU WERE FORCED TO COMPETE FOR INDONESIA IN THE OLYMPICS WHICH SPORT DO YOU THINK YOU BE BEST AT?

Haha yeah right. Probably that one where you throw the spear. What's it called? Big darts.

WHO WOULD BE YOUR IDEAL DINNER GUESTS DEAD OR ALIVE AND WHY?

My family. Boring answer but it's true. They're absolutely amazing and I don't get to see them enough. I'm going home for the first time in three years tomorrow and I can't wait.

IF YOU COULD INTRODUCE ONE THING FROM THE UK TO BALI WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Indicating when you intend on turning. Also, flashing your hazard lights does not mean you plan to go straight. Stop it.

WHAT HAVE BEEN THE BEST 3 NEW TRACKS YOU HAVE HEARD RECENTLY THAT ARE LIKELY TO MAKE INTO YOUR UPCOMING SETS?

New stuff? Aaaah these.

WHERE CAN PEOPLE CATCH YOU PLAYING?

Potato Head Beach Club, 40 Thieves, Karma Beach, Kilo Bali, Som Chai, Mamasan, Old Man's, Tiger Palm, Mano, Lacalaca, Bikini. Pop in :)
