Going In Deep With KU DE TA's Forbidden Fruit

This weekend sees the welcome return of the old guard on the strip KU DE TA coming to the table with their first major musical offering of high season 2018 and it’s a great line-up, an exciting new concept with a secret weapon of an act on the bill we NEED to bring to your attention.

To tell us more about this new concept for the guys at KU DE TA, which is called FORBIDDEN FRUIT we spoke to the music director and resident spinner ARSHAD who kindly took a few minutes out of his hectic schedule to tell us the thinking behind the event and the line-up on this one.

We also manage to speak to the amazing ILLUSTRIOUS BLACKS and asked them to send us a selection of 5 tracks that inspire them to do what they do with a breakdown of why each track made the cut. The Illustrious Blacks are dedicated kings when it comes to fashion, performance and music and in our opinion are worth the entrance fee alone! Fortunately for you though they will also be performing alongside GRANT NELSON, RON BASEJAM as well as KU DE TA's Loco Heroes and Rob Venables.

And finally we have 4 COMPLIMENTARY tickets to give away for one lucky winner for one of the most anticipated parties of the year. The guys at KU DE TA have been throwing world class events for a lot longer than Secret Bali Life has been on the map and never fail to disappoint, as was witnessed last year when Carl Cox came to town, so you should be giving this great Day Party some serious consideration.

But rather than us tell you all about it, here is what the music maestro pulling all the strings at the venue, ARSHAD, had to say on this upcoming event and a whole lot more:

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN YOUR CURRENT ROLE AS MUSIC AND EVENTS DIRECTOR AT KU DE TA AND WHAT WAS YOUR BACKGROUND BEFORE THEN?

I have been the music & event director for Ku De Ta since March 2016, which I fulfil with much joy to this day. From 2003 – 2010 I was the events and music manager for a major Dutch hospitality group, which has venues in The Hague, Rotterdam and Amsterdam. 2011 -2012 the events and music manager for a resort complex in the Dutch Caribbean, that required my input and assistance to set up and brand their beach club and casino.

WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES OF DOING EVENTS AT KU DE TA COMPARED TO OTHER VENUES IN BALI?

One of the main challenges is to stay creative and original, both in event execution as in artist bookings. As many venues have appeared over the last years, the competition grows per day. What differs a KU DE TA party from any other event on the island, is the combination of music, decoration, entertainment, sound & light setup. I can say that KU DE TA is the only venue in Bali that executes their events in this way.
We always create a new theme for our events, for which decoration and entertainment are specially designed and manufactured. We also aim to stay creative in the sound and light setup. Each event execution should be a surprise for our guests, we try to eliminate anything generic (except the venue itself of course).

KU DE TA are renowned for their incredible production at all of their events

THIS YEAR YOU HAVE SWAPPED THE LONGSTANDING BIKINI PARTY FOR THE FORBIDDEN FRUIT DAY PARTY, WHAT BROUGHT THE CHANGE AND WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE EXPECT AT FORBIDDEN FRUIT?

It is still a day event with the same concept, but the phrase 'Bikini' limits the themes we can create around it, hence we decided to change it to Day Party. We leave the pool open, so feel free to bring your seducing bikini or Forbidden speedo:).

WHICH ACTS ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST AT THIS EVENT AND WHY?

I look forward to the whole event, from the start until the end. We have been working together with our dedicated suppliers on all details for months. Hence I can’t say what I look forward to the most during this event. We aim that the whole production runs smoothly, that the venue is packed and that our DJ line up will bring the joy to their track selection, as this is crucial for the success of the event. No dull moments allowed.

IF MONEY AND OTHER FACTORS WERE NO OBJECT WHAT WOULD BE YOUR IDEAL LINE-UP FOR AN EVENT AT KU DE TA?

I would go for a live line-up; We start with D’Angelo, then Jamiroquai, followed by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, then Dr Dre, to finish the evening with Daft Punk. Here you go. Really? Really! It might be on the commercial side of the music spectrum, but to experience all these live artists on 1 single stage would be phenomenal. Of course, I have more personal favourites, but we’re talking about an event at KU DE TA.

WHAT HAVE BEEN THE HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR TIME AT KU DE TA?

First of all my gratitude to the previous music director Billy Tymoszuk, who gave me the opportunity to become one of the KU DE TA residents 6 years ago. I can admit that this was my first highlight. Without this possibility, I would not have been where I am now. Billy left the company in 2016, 6 months later I came on board as the new music director.
Many highlights followed afterwards; to organise the famous Bikini party was an immense task, as you have to follow up towards the expectations of all previous years ( 18th season this year!). But to accomplish this was one of my first highlights. Followed by the White Party a couple of weeks later, I felt that I was able to maintain the quality of these international acclaimed events. Then the highlights in 2017 followed; White Party with Basement Jaxx, DJ Roog & Erick E and the collaboration with Ultra to host their Resistance event with Darren Emmerson, John Digweed, Sasha, Joseph Capriati and Carl Cox. That was the cherry on the cake for 2017.

One of the undoubted highlights of Arshad's time at KU DE TA was the Carl Cox appearance last year

Besides the events, we also broadcast our weekly radio show, which started in April 2007. Over the last few years, we have changed the marketing strategy a bit and created more awareness for the show. We now reach about 6 million weekly listeners worldwide on more than 100 radio stations, with the same love and dedication each and every week.

WHAT OTHER MUSIC EVENTS DO YOU HAVE IN THE PIPELINE?

The White Party will take place on Saturday 18.08.2018 with Erick Morillo, Ferreck Dawn, Glynn Tandy and yours truly. For September and October, we have some smaller events scheduled, which we will share soon.

IF YOU WERE A FORBIDDEN FRUIT WHAT WOULD YOU BE AND WHY?

A lemon. You like it or not.

PICK 3 TRACKS THAT BEST SUM UP THE MUSICAL ETHOS OF FORBIDDEN FRUIT

Lovebirds & Stee Downes – Love like dancin ( Ron Basejam remix)

Harry Romero - Tania (Purple Disco Machine Remix)

Tim Baresko & Room 303 - Marilyn Monroe (Original Mix)

THE ILLUSTRIOUS BLACKS are an absolute coup of a booking for this event. Not as widely known as many of the big hitting DJ’s booked during high season these guys are set to send multi-coloured shockwaves booming out across the island as you can see from this amazing video of their killer track FUNK THAT.

When we were given permission to speak to one of the headline acts for this piece there was only one we were interested in… so here it is, the inspirational tracks that make Monstah and Manchildblack do what they do….

1. "Love & Happiness" by River Ocean feat. India
It's undeniably soulful and still packs a dance floor. The overall message that faith and love will carry you though thick and thin is timeless. Plus, La India vocals sends chills.

2. "As" by Stevie Wonder
The greatest song about romantic and spiritual love of all time by the greatest recording artist of all time. Period.

3. "Controversy" by Prince
Influential to us both at a time when our truths were in question. He more than any other musical artist represents for us our motto: be bold, be brave and be you.

4. "Golden Diva" by Flying Lotus
Flying Lotus superbly uses abstract sounds in his productions. Afrofuturism at its finest.

5. "Opposite People" by Fela Kuti
How can you not dance when this comes on?! Fela is the perfect example of how music can be used as powerful protest.

So there you have it, FORBIDDEN FRUIT clearly has all the ingredients for it to be an amazing party. Massive thanks to Arshad for his time and also of course Manchild Black and Monstah Black for their super soulful selection and we look forward to partying with them and you on Sunday!!!!
