SECRET BALI SOUNDBOYS - #23 - DJ BIAN

Bian is one of the unsung heroes on the Island when it comes to DJ’s yet he probably makes more noise than any of his peers, as a leading Drum ‘n’ Bass DJ. Our editor forged a career in D’n’B and we remember the first time he saw Bian play how he was blown away by his tune selection and dexterity behind the decks. Unfortunately for Bian, currently, the D’n’B scene in Bali is a relatively small one however thanks to a few hard working souls the scene is growing every month!

Bian kindly took time out of his schedule to answer a few questions and send us a mix for the latest Secret Bali Soundboy feature.

BIAN, WHERE ARE YOU FROM ORIGINALLY AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BALI?

I was born in Bandung and raised in Bali, living in Bali since 2003.

SUM UP BALI IN 3 WORDS

Eat, pray, love? haha

YOU ARE WELL KNOWN FOR YOUR LOVE OF D’N’B HOW DID YOU GET INTO IT?

I used to work at a radio station and found a few collection of breakcore stuff on their library (I’m not sure why they had it since they are commercial radio haha) and my teenage mind was curious with that music. I dug the roots of the music and I found jungle music. At the same period there was this regular event called Resistronik at Syndicate Club, curating Bali’s electronic musicians and the event was always closed by a drum n bass dj. I believe that’s how I was introduced to the scene.

WHAT IS THE DNB SCENE LIKE IN BALI AND INDONESIA AS A WHOLE?

The Bali’s scene was huge circa 2008-2010, I think the top moment was when Paradise In Bali was made. For now Bali's drum n' bass fans are still out there, we can see Jenja was packed when they brought Goldie. And also the series from Pousterized, Adultery and Scorched was amazing! Maybe Bali will be the next Ayia Napa for jungle/drum n' bass. For Indonesia's scene, I believe Jerome from Javabass is more capable to answer this question tho..

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE FILM?

Pi (1998) is the one that popped in my head when I saw this question.

WHAT'S ONE OF YOUR FAVOURITE DNB TUNES OF ALL TIME?

Mental Power - Deep Soul

WHAT'S YOUR DREAM CAR?

White Suzuki Katana 88.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE GIG AS A DJ AND WHY?

So many memorable gigs, once there was a guy doing handstands with no pants on and had his penis hanging in front of me or when I shared the decks with Aphrodite!

But all the gigs are supposed to be memorable for me because it’s connected to the journey of my life. From unpaid drum and bass gigs to playing in another country, I have never been with people who really want to rave to jungle music before.

Other memorable gigs were the ones where I finally got an opportunity to play outside the drum n bass genre and play the music I grew up with; my dad’s collection, hiphop and funk. It’s a really nice feeling when I finally knew how to mix those songs I listened to when I was a kid.

And finally, those gigs where I shared the decks with those dj's I attended as a teenager growing up in Bali!

WHICH VENUE HAS THE BEST SOUND SYSTEM FOR BASS IN BALI?

Back in the day there was Junkyard in Legian! But today I believe it’s Jenja downstairs and Bali Praia.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT BALI WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Suwung landfills site into a better place, like what Sweden has successfully done with their trash perhaps?
