Secret Bali Soundgirls - #22 - Niina

DJ NIINA
has been at the forefront of everything good in the Bali DJ scene for nearly 20 years. Landing here in 2000, she can regularly be found playing at all the best venues on the island and in her time has seen many come and go. When not in Bali she globetrots playing in Europe, the Middle East, Australia and other regions of Asia.

Always in demand, and always up for getting the party started on both sides of the decks Niina is a great asset to the island and we are super happy we managed to pin her down for a quick interview with Secret Bali Life so we could find out more about this Secret Bali Soundgirl!

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BALI AND WHERE ARE YOU FROM ORIGINALLY?

Hailing from Finland originally but known as being Swedish, so, Scandinavia basically, far out north. I came here for the first time in 2000, got caught up in it all and I am still here. In recent years however I have done many international tours to Australia, The Middle East, Europe and the rest of the South East Asia to balance the Bali life and get inspired, meet friends and play some amazing gigs.

WHAT ARE THE BEST VENUES OR NIGHTS YOU HAVE PLAYED AT IN YOUR TIME IN BALI?

Always miss the old Double Six hay days, that was my first residency here on the island. August high-season events such as RESISTANCE at KU DE TA, where I have now been a resident for 14 years I think, the old good outdoor parties in the past. I have always enjoyed my current and old resident nights and events equally including Red Ruby, Da Maria, Old Mans, W, Potato Head, Jungle, DJ Café, Maria Magdalena to name but a few…the list is very long!

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST NIGHTMARE MOMENT AS A DJ IN BALI?

Broken turntables, useless mixers, rain coming through the ceiling onto your equipment and you are trying to play and not get electrocuted!

HOW HAS THE MUSIC SCENE IN BALI CHANGED SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED PLAYING AND WHERE DO YOU SEE IT GOING IN THE NEAR FUTURE?

Bali has had a long ride from little island bars to luxury restaurants and resorts, bringing in a whole new type of visitor, which has given the island an opportunity to expand even musically, which means we have more possibilities to play different genres and experiment with our sound. We have more and more excellent local talents too. And today we are able to bring in artists of an International standard to the island, create festivals, amazing venues, and get inspired.

The music scene today; there is something for everyone, all the demographics, age…yes “I can see the future”

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE CARTOON OF ALL TIME?

Moby Dick, Winnie the Pooh, Phantom, Tarzan and Donald Duck

WHAT WAS THE LAST MEAL YOU COOKED?

Pasta Arrabiata, actually just couple of days ago! Hot!

WHERE IS YOU FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE ISLAND TO GO TO UNWIND WHEN YOU GET SOME TIME OFF?

Somewhere super quiet. Now, that is rather difficult here…home? Or my fav 50m pool in canggu for my laps.

I have had so far: Dave (that was a girl in the end), Rosie, Donna Summer and Elvis. I could do Tina Turner maybe?
