Secret Bali Soundboys - #20 - KAISER WALDON

Since his arrival on the shores of Bali, Kaiser Waldon has really shown what can be done by a young hungry music loving DJ, producer and promoter on the Island of the Gods. His enthusiasm for what he does is evident for all to see and appreciate, and his music is loved by many and rightfully so.

It is a rare thing when you bump into a DJ in the VIP section of a flagship night on the island and he explains he is leaving early to go and do some work in the studio rather than get annihilated on free alcohol.. unless he had already drunk his quota of course! ☺

This drive and infectious joie de vivre is probably why he picked up the ‘Mr Beat’ award from our friends at the @beatmagazine most recently.

We managed to pin Kaiser down for just about long enough to get him to answer a few questions about his music, the island and his nightmare moment as a DJ!

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BALI AND WHAT BROUGHT YOU HERE?

I moved on xmas day 2016 and arrived to play at Single Fin.

I moved here from Sydney, it's nightlife with the new controversial lock lot out laws saw over 30 venues close in Sydney, I lost my job 3 times in the capacity of a music director plus countless Dj Residencies…

I’ve been playing my house vibe in bali for over 6 years and often came here to write music. Since making music and djing are my core focus at the moment, I’d been preparing to move to bali for some time and it felt like the right time. It’s a place that allows me to constantly be inspired, play music I love, and experience others doing the same which all influences my own music production.

DO YOU HAVE A SPIRITUAL HOME IN BALI VENUE WISE?

Spiritually it would have to be Single Fin, Sundays. Adam Bennets passed the Residencey to myself and Ryan Crowie so we have been alternating Sundays since we got here, there is something magical about that place.. 5 hour sets taking the crowed on a journey and to see this place develop musically allows us to create moments for people they have never experienced before.

WHAT’S YOUR GET OUT OF JAIL FREE RECORD – NEVER FAILS TO LIFT THE CROWD?

It’s a tough one I have a few depending on the venue and sound.

For Mrs Sippy, it would be:

For Single Fin, it would be:

WHAT’S BEEN YOUR MOST NIGHTMARE MOMENT AS A DJ?

This is a hard one off the top of my head.. which is probably a good thing! Not so much a nightmare.. but I always get upset seeing people fight.. it's something very very rare in Bali… but that’s something that always makes me upset, sad and shakes me up so its always a challenge to not let that mentally effect you and your performance.

HOW WOULD YOU SUM UP THE SCENE IN BALI AND HOW IT IS DIFFERENT FROM ANYWHERE ELSE YOU HAVE BEEN RESIDENT?

My style really suits the island, its very Euro and Latin American geared… Since these people know how to dance its in their DNA and my rolling bass line driven groovers really, I was surprised House music wasn’t as big as it should be there.. But I’m starting to see more djs play house which is great.. That kind of mix crowed is very different to Australia, They are more patient here.. so I can often play 2-3 minute mixes and often keep 2 songs going the whole time … Most djs will agree that some of the most fun or ‘magic’ is what happens during your mix.. between the 2 tracks since you’ll never be able to exactly replicate that moment …

YOU RUN A COOL BRAND CALLED ESCAPE… IN A NUTSHELL TELL US ABOUT THAT FOR THOSE NOT FAMILIAR WITH IT AND WHERE YOU WILL BE POPPING UP IN THE NEAR FUTURE?

Escape is all about a positive feeling that’s reflected in the music, the way we go on about things… and we value inclusion participation and we treat our regulars like family. Our next escape events are Jenja 19th, our last one was one of the biggest Thursdays they've had in a while! It was such a fun night!

YOU ARE A BUSY LITTLE BEE IN THE STUDIO WE UNDERSTAND, WHAT DO YOU PREFER, PLAYING OUT OR STUDIO TIME?

If you had a gun to my head I’d probably shout out Studio Time.. but really you can’t have one without the other.. I love being able to play my music that I might have stayed up all night writing inspired from the night before and play it out that day, with the crowed having no clue that it’s a song I wrote that morning and seeing their reactions too it… I really love both equally… but again if I had to pick.. it would be creating because it allows other djs to share my art, where as Djing is a bit more self focused.
