Secret Bali Soundboys - #18 - JAMES TAYLOR

Fresh off the heels of picking up the best House & Techno DJ at the BEAT awards ceremony James Taylor has been a genuine asset to the island since he made the move from Australia to play an integral part in the now legendary and sorely missed KOH nightclub.

James is loved by crowds and other DJ’s in equal measure and is as nice a bloke as he is good a DJ. It’s a pleasure to be able to feature James in this weeks Secret Bali Soundboy feature…

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BALI?

Just over 3 years.

WHAT IS OR WAS YOUR FAVOURITE VENUE IN BALI OTHER THAN RED RUBY WHERE YOU WORK OF COURSE?

The most special place in my heart in Bali will always be Koh.. (RIP) Was the reason I came here and where my life in Bali kicked off!

WHAT'S YOUR GET OUT OF JAIL FREE RECORD - NEVER FAILS TO LIFT THE CROWD?

WHAT'S BEEN YOUR MOST NIGHTMARE MOMENT AS A DJ?

Cueing up my first track at a festival called Field Day in Sydney only to realise I have no headphones with me. There would have been a couple of thousand people in the crowd watching me frantically look around for anyone on stage who could sort me out, as the song from the last set was counting down. Ended up having to do my first mix blind before a sound tech came to my aid with a set of headphones. Mix wasn’t too bad, stress levels were through the roof though.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE MUSIC SCENE IN BALI COMPARED TO YOUR HOMETOWN SYDNEY?

Speaking from the club music scene in particular - Variety would be the main thing. Sydney has dedicated and thriving sub cultures for a much wider variety of electronic music sounds. Being a tourist Island tends to limit how abstract music can be in clubs over here. However, Bali has much better venues and locations offering music than Sydney, it just doesn’t have the variety.

HOW DID IT FEEL TO WIN THE BEST DJ AWARD AT THE BEAT AWARDS LAST WEEK?

It was a trip and completely unexpected. Very nice to be recognised.

IF MONEY WAS NO OBJECT WHO WOULD YOU BOOK FOR YOU IDEAL LINE-UP IN RED RUBY?

Danny Howells, Lee Burridge and Ricardo Villalobos

WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME WHEN YOU ARE NOT SPINNING RECORDS?

Surfing and taking my dogs to the beach take up most if not all of my spare time. (shout out to Tiger & Barney)

WHO WOULD BE YOUR 3 ULTIMATE DINNER GUESTS DEAD OR ALIVE?

Hitler, Kurt Cobain and Kelly Slater

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT BALI WHAT WOULD IT BE?

The Traffic
