GOING IN DEEP WITH RAMMÖ

RAMMÖ is an interesting one for us because he is all about Secret Bali Living... let us explain. RAMMÖ is actually a two piece outfit, one half of which, Adrien, decided to up sticks from Europe and set up in Bali. But unlike most DJ’s here, rather than getting every gig he can get his hands on he has played a far more interesting game.
RAMMÖ has been playing all round Asia, from India to Sri Lanka whilst also taking the time to run his successful label Klassified which he describes himself as a a community of music lovers & world travelers.
Ahead of his debut at Red Ruby this Friday at their Afters event where he will be playing all night long we managed to pin the man down and find out more about this mysterious man…

SO YOU MADE A NAME FOR YOURSELF PLAYING IN A TWO-MAN SET-UP IN EUROPE, TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT THAT AND WHAT MADE YOU MOVE TO BALI FROM EUROPE?

The project RAMMÖ was born in Amsterdam with Alex, my brother, one of my true inspirators… We created this Dj name when we moved to the Netherlands a few years ago, it's the name of the Egyptian Goddess of wind, “you can feel but cannot see” (after party brainstorming sessions ah ah). We decided that we would always play under the same name even though sometimes we play separately.

Our style is best defined as Electronica Melodic but always depends on the crowd and the story they want to tell with underground and melodic music.

I decided to move to Bali to make it easier to travel around Asia and share our ‘European’ music style with Asian crowds, artists and mix it with different cultures. AMAZING experience! (and of course surf, sun and the smiley people made it easy to come to this Island).

YOU ALSO RUN A RECORD LABEL: KLASSIFIED, TELL US ABOUT THAT AND THE CHALLENGES OF RUNNING IT FROM BALI?

Klassified is a community of music lovers & world travelers.
Through our get together events and our music releases, we gather a community of spiritual and awaken people sharing the same love for life & music. Apart from our agency and our releases, we organize a yearly festival combining electronic music and well-being activities in the south of France, where we were born. My partner stayed in France to run it from there also, so it’s not necessarily challenging for this reason. The challenge now is to expand the brand and label in Asia. Challenge accepted.

YOU MOVED TO BALI 5 MONTHS AGO, BUT HAVE BEEN UNDER THE RADAR, BUT WE WILL COME TO THAT IN A MINUTE, WHAT HAVE BEEN THE HIGHLIGHTS?

Highlight in Bali? Falling in the rice field as a typical tourist (and not even drunk…yet).
Jokes apart, I think my gigs at Jenja or Bali Spirit Festival were definitely highlights and very positive experiences.
And probably the All night Long at Red Ruby will be one to remember… lot of new upcoming tracks to share!

WE KNOW FROM SPEAKING TO YOU THAT YOU ARE KEEN NOT TO GET A REPUTATION AS A ‘BALI’ DJ, HENCE WHY YOU HAVE BEEN UNDER THE RADAR. WHY IS THAT?

It’s not about not getting a reputation of a Bali Dj. My objective is to not become mainstream and to continue playing in my niche. I want to build a community of music lovers who have an ear for the emotions I aim to provide when playing my tracks. If Bali provides me with the opportunity to connect with my targeted audience then I am more than happy to grow further here in Bali.

WHICH DJS IN BALI HAVE YOU BEEN MOST IMPRESSED WITH ?

Difficult to say as I did not hear everyone yet but definitely Tiago Oudman, he is a great artist who can connect with the crowd better than anyone I’ve seen in Bali and adapt his style to make everyone dance til’ the end of his set. He is an experienced and amazing guy playing around Asia and Europe. B2B Tiagö / Rammö ?

And for sure Raff Track is on my top list. This guy is just SO passionate about music and is an extremely genuine person. He is always searching for the upcoming tracks and sharing them during his gigs. He also did recent productions which I played during a few gigs, and people reacted very well.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE SCENE IN BALI, WHAT FOR YOU ARE THE POSITIVES AND THE NEGATIVES?

As we mentioned previously, the scene here is a real challenge. In every touristic city, the music scene is facing many difficulties as tourists are here on holiday and just want to party. The good thing is that it guarantees the places to be crowded and diverse, which makes it interesting for any Dj to play who needs to find a way to make everyone dance.

However, tourists’ taste tends to be quite commercial and do not even look at who is playing beforehand. Though I believe a growing crowd of connoisseur is seeking for exclusive and unique events.

Bali is an amazing and beautiful island with amazing locations and some people are doing really great stuff and amazing bookings so for the passionate, it is a pleasure to go see a guy like Mathew Jonson or Louie Vega recently.

YOU HAVE ALREADY PLAYED ALL OVER ASIA IN YOUR 5 MONTHS HERE, WHERE EXACTLY HAVE YOU BEEN AND WHAT HAVE BEEN THE HIGHLIGHTS AND HOW DO OTHER REGIONS DIFFER FROM WHAT YOU HAVE SEEN HERE?

I had the chance to mix around Asia in Singapore, Sri Lanka, India… or even China last week. Very difficult question but Sri Lanka was definitely an unforgettable experience. I was absolutely not expecting this… People partying for 2 days in a row non stop, dancing on rooftops, on the beach, in the club, on the bar.. everywhere. I played there early morning and people were so receptive and welcoming.. what a country.

HOW WOULD YOU SUM UP YOUR MUSIC AND PICK 3 TUNES FOR US THAT REALLY DEFINE THE SOUND YOU LIKE TO PLAY

Electronic story telling sets

Upcoming track by our friend Sam Shüre on SVT … GENIUS

Track by KMLN who used to live in Bali actually.. amazing people and what a track.. released on our compilation last month

Older track but perfect vocals. Used to play it to close some sets, so we all leave the place smiling with this melody and voices in our heads

WHAT HAS BEEN THE BEST GIG YOU HAVE BEEN TO IN BALI AND WHY?

Mathew Jonson at W hotel because he is just a music geek and a music hero!

WHAT DO YOU THINK NEEDS TO HAPPEN FOR THE BALI MUSIC SCENE TO CATCH UP WITH THE SCENES IN OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD?

It’s all about the crowd. The key will be whether Bali creates its own musical identity or adapts to the touristic trends. This in my eyes will define the future of the Bali scene. People are looking for experiences and discoveries. Plus, let’s not forget about the authenticity of this island, of this country.

IF YOU COULD CURATE YOUR OWN EVENT WHO WOULD DEFINITELY BE ON THE BILL?

Event coming up soon and some surprises on the bill.

WHATS BEEN YOUR MOST NIGHTMARE MOMENT AS A DJ?

The typical birthday requests for sure.
Or someone who mistaked RnB club with Underground club... Can happen (ah ah) Not!

AND WHAT HAS BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT?

Doing the warm up for the legendary Frank Wiedemann (Âme) for sure. This guy is an inspiration to all Djs and producers especially. Have a look at his studio.. unbelievable!
